Adjusting the ASIO buffer size is just one of many tweaks you can do. If you've already gone as high as 1024 on your ASIO buffer, then that's about as far as you can go with that approach. You can crank the buffers as high as you want for playback, but for recording you'll want them 512 or 128.
You may just be maxxing out your CPU. Try telling Windows to give priority to background tasks. How many tracks do you have, and how many effects? You may just have to reduce the CPU load by printing some effects, combining tracks onto busses and applying the effects there, freezing tracks, substituting less CPU-intensive plugs.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.
