The best 2 channel SOUND CARD - GUIDE ME please

Hi guys...

I have a home studio recording mostly VOCALS 4 HipHop Groups.
Im running on a MAUDIO AUDIOPHILE 2496 in a AMD 3000+. MIC - AKG 3000B and a MACKIE mixer. ROLAND A90 are the monitors. SONAR 6 is my soft....

The sound card i have is the minimal 4 a "studio". I want 2 upgrade my sound card 4 the best possible. I dont really need more than 2 channels so i wanted 2 invest all the money available in the best 2 channels sound card possible.
Can someone guide me on that process ? Advise on the CARD..

I thought the UAD PROJECT PACK was a audio card + plug ins so i thought i had all figured it out...My bad...

Thanks 4 anyone who ansewrs....

By the way, i live in MAPUTO - MOZAMBIQUE - AFRICA
This is my old, and the building of the new studio...

The general consensus for 2 channel cards, if you have the budget for them, are the Lynx 22 and RME 9632 cards. At this point in history, definitely you want to move up to a PCI-e based board and get the PCI-e based versions of these cards.

I'll agree with the Lynx 22 suggestion but obviously you won't be needing the PCI-e since your MB is PCI.

Another idea though, have you thought about maybe just getting a nice AD converter or even the RME ADI-2?
If you went the an AD converter then you'd want to later get a DA as well. That's the reasoning behind the RME suggestion. Just a thought.

That's why I recommended that he upgrade the MB. Given that the audio card will cost two or three times what the MB will cost, and is likely to have two or three times the life span, it's probably worth upgrading the MB and get the latest technology for the audio card. Since he didn't sound like he was too tight on cash, I figured it was worth thinking about. Else, he could get the PCI version and stay with the current MB. But, what happens 2 or 3 years from now when it wants to upgrade the MB and the selection of MBs that still have PCI slots is getting thinner and thinner and limiting his MB options? It'll be a lot more expensive to buy a new audio card at that point, than to just buy a new MB now.

Totally agree with all those things, all the more reason to go with the converter idea.

A lot of us around the forum are using MIA cards. I hesitate to recommend them anymore though because they're becoming dated.

i use an echo mia midi (PCI), it's about $130. it doesn't have the high quality converters of say the lynx or RME but it is quiet.

dean makes an excellent point about PCIe - if you have the money to upgrade your board you should. if you just want something quick and cheap, the mia may be for you - they do have vista drivers (but i can't vouch for them as i am avoiding vista as one would avoid herpes or ebola-infected rhesus monkeys).
