Digital converter

I was just reading an article about acoustic guitar recording. Between the pre amp and DAW was an apogee rossetta converter. Can someone tell me exactly what this does ?

    It serves more or less the same function as a sound card. Converts the analog to digital signal. Apogee used to be a lot more popular in the 80's. About half the records you bought back then used Apogee converters.
