OT: Gigabit router recommedation

My standard router is acting flaky and I am wanting to upgrade to a gigabit router. Hopefully with my gigabit ethernet cards I will load samples between machines faster and want have a go with FXteleport again to see if it works better with gigabit. Can anybody suggest a fairly inexpensive gigabit router with at least 4 ports?

I like Linksys products. Try the RVS4000.

A gigabit switch where all computers are patched and the old router (100mb) above where the printers are patched is probably a cheaper way to go gigabit.

Hmm. Never thought about doing it that way. So I would have all 4 computers attached to the gigabit switch, and then the gigabit switch attached to the 100mbs router by a single line from the gigabit switch?

Your current device is actually a router + a 4 port hub combined in the same box. But they're still separate devices. When you go to gigabit, there are no hubs; just switches. If the router works OK, then use it as M at H suggests. If not, then the RVS4000 or RV004 should serve your well.

Just want to confirm this before I purchase a gigabit switch. From what I gather from the information above..
-> I would connect my each of my 4 computers gigabit LAN ports to the gigabit switch with ethernet cables. From the gigabit switch to the older 100mps router I would run a single crossover cable. This would allow gigabit transfer speed between the computers and each computer would still be able to access the internet through the router. Each computer has its own dedicated printer so I am not concerned about that.

Also, How does DHCP work to assign IP addresses to each computer by the router if only a single line runs from the gigabit switch to the router?

Thanks for your input a this somewhat unusual setup...

Really don't think it's all that unusual. Your incoming internet is one public address. The router takes that address and doles it out via DHCP to your internal LAN devices. A router with several ports is nothing more than a router with a built in switch.

So your gigabit switch connected to router via the one cable... is nothing more than an extension of what you already have.

You are just now using a router with a "not" built in switch.

The DHCP part is transparent and pretty much automatic.

I guess where I am getting concerned is connecting one switch (one of the routers built in ports) to another switch (the gigabit switch) and expecting it to dole out seperate IPs. I didn't realize you could chain a set of switchs(gigabit switch) to a single switch(one of the routers ports) and the older routers still sort out the DHCP stuff as I thought the router would only assign one IP to each port of the routers "adjacent" switch. Does that make sense?

Your concerns make perfect sense. But think of it like a 6 outlet powerstrip into a wall plug. You haven't "requested" any electricity by plugging it in.

    Request. Assign. Request. Assign.

    Here's the one I use:
    SMC EZSwitch

It's small and lightweight, and I just attached it to the side of my mixer desk. Works really well with FX Teleport.

no crossover setup needed in my setup. Just small patchcables.

    ADSL modem/cablemodem

    Router (ond DHCP (ip supplier)

all printers and slow devices in network (backupdisks)

Gigabit switch attached to all multimedia computers

A switch is not a router. A switch is a devider. It cannot perform anything special. A router can do DHCP etc etc.
networkprinters/scanners can be on static IP in router. This makes them easily accesable in the network.

Okay, now I get it. So the crossover cable is not really needed either. Thanks.

Just got my dlink DGS2205 gigaswitch. One question. It has simply 5 ethernet ports. Do I just plug my 2 computers into these and the current router into any available remaining port? I was envisioning more of a "computers" ports and a "internet" port being on their. Probably a stupid question, sorry.

not stupid. it doesn't matter with any modern switch where the "upstream" router cable gets plugged in. be aware that gigabit will increase your transfer speed but in my experience you'll get about 2 to 3 times the speed you would on a 100mbps line, maybe 25-40MB/sec, but probably no more than that unless you have some seriously fast hard drives. just so you know. =)
