multi-track recording for 8 year old
Hi Guys, my boss at work has an eight year old son which is a wiz at the piano and with computers. Does anyone know of some very simple multi-track recording software which he could use to lay a few (upto 4) tracks down? It's would be nice if he could start getting his feet wet, preferably with free-ware. Thx, Tomek.

reaper is free. computer music produce a free studio app i think it's on the cover dvd each month or may be downloadable. but if he is a computer whizz then why not just create a small template in sonar with instruments pre-loaded? or are you worried incase his songs are gonna be better than urs???!!!!!!!!

I'm certain his tracks will be better than ours- hehe (it's incredible what these young kids are capable of these days) Sonar template is a good idea, but we are not prepaid to spend that much money on S/W for a kid to mess around on... I was thinking about reaper becuase it's free, but I'm a bit worried it may be too complex? I haven't ever seen it, so I'm no certain how strieght forward it will be.. Any ideas? is it easy to insert and arm audio tracks in Reaper? It's that's the case, maybe we'll give it a whirl.. Tomek.

I'd suggest Audacity, it's free too. Or Music Creator - from what I've heard it's suitable and cheap... but I can't find a link to it's Cakewalk page... And the Cakewalk EULA says you can have the software on a couple of PCs, but only for original user.

Reaper is very easy to use IMHO. I'm becoming a big fan of that sequencer. As soon as I discovered you could install it on a USB flash drive then I tried it out. If there's one feature thats changed the way I work then that's it - I can now sit at my day job and mock up ideas before plugging it into any other Windows machine to continue at a later time.

I concure on Audacity, i even use it some times because its so easy to use. im sure there are simple cakewalk programs also Oh yea and if you have M-Audio keyboard Session is really great

Heck, if he right clicks on anything, he'll think that he hit the 4th layer of h3ll or something!!! (FYI: In Reaper, you can pretty much configure EVERYTHING via right clicking it) I would suggest Kristal for multitracking: http://www.kreatives.org/kristal/ Features: * FREE!!! * 16 audio tracks * 32 Bit floating point audio engine * 44.1 to 192 kHz sample rate * 3-band parametric EQ & * 2 VST insert slots per channel * 3 VST master effect slots * ASIO low latency audio driver support * 4 KRISTAL Plug-In slots As others have mentioned previously, Audacity would be an awesome editior for him to use, once he's comfortable with it. Good luck!! -mr moon

Thanks for all the great help guys! I was fearing Reaper may be a tad much.. I think I'll try Audacity and Kristal on my box 1st, and go from there... You've helped make a great 8 year old even greater! Cheers, Tomek.

If you do a google search for "kristal audio" you'll find some functional download links which will have to suffice until the main kristal page comes back online. Also, don't forget to load up on free vst effects! As a starter, I'd suggest the "Kjaerhus Classic series", the "GVST" plugs, and the free vsts offered by Voxengo, some of which are really good and have a really easy user interface to learn by. Good luck! -mr moon
