PC Specs- I'm confused...

Hey all-

Been a while since I've been on the Cakewalk boards; finally getting back to work in my modest home studio after some unplanned time away, and I'm strongly considering upgrading my DAW PC. I am confused about how to balance out processor speed and Front Side Bus stats, and somewhat MOBO. Specifically:

Possible PC option 1:
Dual Core 3.4 GHz Pentium D 800MHz FSB, MOBO Intel 975X

Possible PC option 2:
Core 2 Duo 2.13GHz/1066MHz FSB, MOBO Asus w/975X Chipset

- 2GB RAM for both, w/slots for up to 4
- Same Hard Drives/space
- Same graphics card (Radeon X1050 1 VGA / 1DVI-I)

So my overall questions are:
1) Is 2.13GHz w/1066MHz FSB "better/faster" than 3.4GHz w/800MHz FSB? Vice versa? My understanding is that the Core 2 Duo w/a faster FSB will be much beefier, but I admit I am getting confused by all the Duo/Dual talk!

2) Any feedback on the MOBOs?

I really appreciate any schooling on this!

Thanks,

The Core2 is way, way faster. Don't worry about the FSB spec at all, the main thing you need to know is that the Core 2 is a completely different chip design, so clock comparisons won't line up at all. The Pentium D is the old (and now obsolete) design and is not only beaten by the Athlon X2, it's completely stomped by the Core2.

PC Option 1 by a long shot!!!!

    2) Any feedback on the MOBOs?

Any major brand 975X chipset board should do just fine.

    1) do not not not get a pentium d. unless you want a computer than you can also fry your eggs on.

core 2 duo is MUCH faster, and just as importantly cooler (which equates to less fan noise).

    2) ASUS seems to be a commonly recommended brand for DAW use. No personal experience but they work well in several computers built for friends.

Seems to be the definite (and now obvious!) consensus- thanks for your reply, dd.
