speaker vs loudspeaker

ok, i was looking at behringer speakers...and i came across 2 different ones, both 12" speakers, both behringer, both 150 dollars. but one was a 2-way speaker that was 200W/400W handling, and one was a loudspeaker with 500W handling......whats the difference between a 2-way speaker and a loudspeaker. seems like the 500w would usually be more expensive if its the same brand

That's fishy. There's no difference at all, just terminology.

I'd look for some model numbers and detailed specification sheets.

No difference that I'm aware of unless I'm just not thinking today.

It's probably meaningless in terms of terminology but I usually equate loudspeaker to mean like a PA grade device that may or may not be suitable for studio monitoring. Usually, a loudspeaker (the garden variety PA types) aren't very good for anything other than making a lot of noise for gigs or rehearsal. You wouldn't want to mix an album with one of those. I'm not even sure I'd want to use them for a low-end home stereo. Not because they aren't loud enough or anything like that. It's usually that loudspeakers are designed to disperse the maximum amount of noise forward with little regard for sound quality (although these days, the gap has narrowed considerably). Mackie and JBL and EAW and Bag End, etc. make loudspeakers that sound great.

Anyone else have a different assessment?

i have to agree with krizrox. i would look a bit closer at the specs. but just from what you wrote, the speakers, although priced the same, might be suited to different purposes. if theyre both suitable for studio monitoring, i would think that one or the other is an older model that has been priced down.

Based on this thread, and the fact that these are 12" speakers, I'd wager he's in the market for PA speakers, not studio monitors.

Let's just call them electrical to acoustic energy transducers and be done with it!

Duh! (dope slap forthcoming). Yeah, loudspeaker is generally meant as a term for PA speakers.
