Desktop DAW PC is not connected to the Internet, so no AV software on there. USB drives are not a problem because everything is scanned on a different PC before being transferred to the DAW PC.

Laptop PC is connected to the Internet and I'm running Norton Internet Security on that. Past versions were very CPU hungry, but starting with the 2009 version, Symantec finally got it right and Norton runs fine now.

It's funny this thread is from 2007 but reads like it might have been started today.

DAW computers= no AV - only on line after OS install then disable network forever.
Office computer = Avast free, easy to turn off.
Avast 30 day trial full version is also handy if you are surfing the big scary waves.
USB- Scanned before file transfer to DAW.
Note- Got a trojan once that turned out came via our Camera SD card I'd put in printing service Kiosk.

SD card, USB  etc and photo print shops = BIG risk. Better to bun the photos you want to print onto a CD and take that around.

I used AVG for a while. It is pretty cool with little CPU drain. I use Norton Security Suite now mainly because it is free with our Comcast subscription. I never disable auto protect of the firewall and never had a problem running my projects. (2-5 synths and up to 40-60 tracks. lots of plugs)

I've used Norton before and this version does not take to long to load. Quicker than AVG.

I tried installing it on my wifes laptop but everything went haywire. We had to do a quick restore to fix the problem. The problem is AOL though. She won't give it up. What amazes me about AOL is that they boast anti-spyware and all the bs but AOL's software is  spyware. I have not put AOL on my computer for 8 or 9 years and counting. Almost sounds like an AA pledge. LOL!

Notation, the original DAW. Everything else is just rote. We are who we are and no more than another. Humans, you people are crazy.

8 computesr in the house

4 with AV, 4 without.

Since I do the windows-support-day-job-thang for a couple dozen clients I evaluate many free versions here: ms, avg, avast,...
During the past 20 years I have paid for Norton, and Eset (and another) for personal use.

I have never liked McAfee, and CA. And the newest norton stuff has a most annoying interface, difficult to change settings.

(I am a MS partner, gonna soon be installing Forefront on the main business computer.)

6 machines have Spybot Teatimer running always. And I immunize regularly.

All computers are connected to the local network, all have internet access.

The DAW has no protection. I often browse CW and other forums.

Usually, I use the main computer to download all stuff.

In over 20 years I have had 2 infections. And both were on a computer with AV. Both new viruses, fixed by norton within 2 hours.

No physically exciting sites are visited using the unproteced computers.

Careful is as careful does.

Lots of links here: http://www.freebyte.com/antivirus/

Kaspersky's virus removal tool is one of the best, updated daily.

And of course Malwarebytes.net, and Safer-Networking.net are your friends.

AVG here.
Keep it disabled mostly because I'm never online with my DAW.

I used AVG until I got a virus.  You know, the one that pretends to be an anti-virus ad, says "Your computer has been infected!"  No s--t. Time-Warner referred me to  Microsoft, and they took over my computer and got rid of it.  For free!! WTF!  Subsequently I got CA from  TW, and that turned out to be a slow loading, resource hogging beating.  Not to mention the fact that it turned everything I downloaded into an "efw" file, and I had to figure out how to undo that.  So I bought Norton 360.  I'm not terribly fond of it, either, for reasons others have noted, but my computer's been well defended, at least.  It doesn't seem to interfere with Sonar, but how would I know--I can't turn it off.  Maybe without it I could run six or seven instances of GR4 instead of just five.  Not that I've actually tried that either.

I use AVG Internet Security, and that's what I recommend to my clients. In fact, it's also what I use to remove the viruses Norton and McAfee miss.

The free versions of AVG, Avira, Avast and others are good, but they don't even try to catch everything. If they did, no one would buy the full versions.

No anti-virus program will catch everything, anyway. The infection Clint mentions isn't a virus, in fact. It's malware, but not actually a virus. Spybot Search and Destroy and Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware (terrible name, great product) are very good, free tools to remove malware and restore Windows' own security features (such as they are). If you use these, please donate to Spybot--even if it's only $10 after your machine is working fine again. The poor guy develops and maintains this product to impress a girl! Who can't relate to that?

Avoid the on-line virus scanners from Panda and others. They report a LOT of false-positives. If you remove what they say are "infections", you'll screw up your programs or Windows. Trust me--I'm not trying to sell you anything!  You can buy Panda (and the others) if you want--just don't use the on-line scanners.

These are the tools I use every day to remove viruses, Trojans and malware from my clients' computers.

I no longer use ZoneAlarm; I found out it was interfering with my networking capabilities, at least after I installed Windows 7 RTM.
On reliable advice I switched to Microsoft Security Essentials. Now my ipv6-to-ipv4 is working, and it doesn't seem to interfere with Sonar at all.

I think the AVG is the best for the windows as well as all the OS. It is most effective and the best one to stop viruses.

There are so many antivirus software are available in the market such as

- AVG
- Avira
- Macefee
- Avast
- Northan
- Quick Heal
- Bit defender

I have avira antivirus. I like it because Its good and fast as compare to other anti virus software But Dont forget to update in time a couple of days, or twice a week.
