E-MU 0404 Latency Test Results

I tested an E-MU 0404 with the CEntrance utillity on XP x64. Here are the results:

192kHz was 8.61 ms
44.1kHz was 10.29 ms
96 kHz was 5.21 ms
96 kHz was 7.21 ms
96 kHz was 9.21 ms

While the 0404 could be set to lower buffer sizes, it could not playback sound clearly at them. In conclusion, I could not use the 0404 to monitor in real time. The latency was unfortunately too high.

Yeah, same reason I returned it.

wow that's really bad. it seems that the drivers for that device are just not up to par.

    does it have x64 drivers?
just checked and it has, it recommends you install the v1.81 patch first though...
but the emu beta drivers for vista are apparently v. buggy...maybe vista x64 drivers will be more stable.

I guess my question is.............for audio what difference does it make?

Patch Mix offers zero latency monitoring when set up properly..right?

The same can be said on your M-Audio thread. I own ....2 M-Audio PCI cards. The M-Audio control panel allows for Zero latency monitoring ..........yes...... input and output.

I do understand latency issues with synths etc.

For audio, properly configured ,either product should work well.

Their is no hard fast rule that you need to use Sonar's input monitoring with these devices to record audio.

i think the point is that the performance is far worse than that in even 32-bit winXP. agreed, for audio monitoring is better done with a mixer or the soundcard monitor. but for softsynths and as a performance benchmark that number is indeed important.

Really, why would you use Sonar's input monitoring? The card itself handles monitoring with zero latency.

    For benchmarks?
Input monitoring with ANY latency at all would be unacceptable if you ask me.

I guess we need to wait for better driver support so we can avoid having latency if we were to push that button that we never push.

    Jamz Or,

I will admit I have used input monitoring.........but in a different way.

I am fully aware that my 24/96 AD/DA's aren't the best. So I will occasionally audition a track via input monitoring and add a few plugins to get an idea of where I am really at ...before laying the track...........at that point I may decide on another pre(I have a few) or a touch of EQ or analog compression. However thats where it all ends ..............

I return to my mixer for Zero latency monitoring.

    Its all good.

just out of interest, are you on dual-core cpu? if so have you downloaded the patch recently released for dual-core (see thread 'am i crazy' in sonar forum) and are you using WDM driver mode? be interesting to see, if you can do that, what the latency figures are then...
