Does Ampeg VST Plug In Require ilok or other dongle?

Hi
I am considering buying thge Ampeg plug in for bass. I have seen several that put it on their list of great plug ins.

I currently record through my UA LA610 for bass, going direct, but through a tube pre and the LA2A compressor.

Occasionally, I want a grittier sound than a clean direct bass will get. I have a hard time with Guitar Rig and while I have the UAD Nigel and Izotope Trash, I was wondering if the Ampeg was much better suited for bass (after all, it is based on a bass amp, right?)

I don't care for iloks or other dongles and would prefer not to have to go that route. Any comments?

Thanks

It didn't require one for me, though it seemed to have gone through the motions of installing the support for one.

No, it doesn't need a dongle. Not sure what you are looking for sound from that Ampeg plugin, but in my experience with it so far it seems kinda 'thin'.
Meaning, it does have that great Ampeg tone, but lacking the depth and feel. Hard to explain until you hear it I guess. Try out the demo before spending the $$$ Dongles are as good as protection as those old steering wheel locks~ Two files can fix that.

I have read that Amplitube has a problem with dual cores. Is this the case for Ampeg?

I'm running Amplitube on a dual core with no problems. Someone might have had a problem during mixdown with dual cores with certain settings or certain other plugs, but I'm not. I'm not using the 64 bit engine during mixdown though. That sometimes causes problems with some plugs.

no problems here on my dual core either. I like it for recording at home on personal stuff, if I am doing a real record though I prefer to record an actual bass cab. I find the real thing sits in the mix much better. your direct setup sounds like it would be superior to the plug, but i guess if your looking for some grit, it could be useful.

wow great responses. I prefer to go direct on bass. I have a Carvin with active electronics that has a pretty good range of sounds. I also have my UA LA 610 which gives it tube warmth. It just sometimes needs air.

    That'll help immensely...
That along with Ampeg SVX will yield pretty good results.

The DI chain you use has a profound affect on the final result of any amp-sim.

The issues that you may bump into with IK plugs is related to Sonar's "64Bit summing" and "multi-processor" options.
If you notice problems with IK plugins, try disabling the above feature while working with the IK plugs. You can freeze the tracks when you're finished working on them... and re-enable "64Bit summing" and "Use Multiple Processors."

The newest updates for the SVX and Amplitube2 do not require a syncrosoft dongle. Simple challange/response...

It did require a Steinberg Key dongle when it was first released (so I had to get one). Then they decided to go with a challenge-response option instead. I really like the Ampeg SVX plug. I've done some amazing bass tracks with crappy basses going direct. It is a CPU hog, though, so freeze your bass line when it's done!

I am running dual dual core Opterons and version 1.1.1 made a big difference in stability over version 1.1, but it still feels a little fragile. I hope they are on the case because this is a really nice pluggin.
