won't export audio

I'm new to this software, but it can't be this hard. I open a MIDI file from the sample folder. It plays just fine. I click "select all" from the menu, and then go to file - Export - ...and nothing is lit up. What am I missing?

How are you playing the MIDI files? If you are using a softsynth(ie. Edirol VSC) it is pretty straight forward.
If you are using the Microsoft Wavetable synth, it can be a real pain.

You'll have to convert MIDI to audio for export. I use the "what you hear" option... I can give you more detail if needed. The gurus might have more and simpler ways but htat's how I have done it for years. Let us know if you need more. and welcome to the forum.

Actually I'll go in detail real quick.

Open Windows mixer (Right click on speacker in tray of windows, choose open volume controls, Go to options-->Properties, select recording, Make sure there is a check in "What you here", push OK, selct "What you here"

OK make sure the volume is half way, if not you'll get feedback

now in cakewalk, create an audio track and arm it for recording

Solo the MIDI trck and the recording track.

Push play and let it record

Stop when done and you have an audio track of the MIDI that can be exported.

Be sure to switch from "What you hear" back to microphone or what ever you are recording from.

Hope this helps But like I said the gurus Greg, Gambler, ETC might know an easier way

PS sorry for the misspelling I've had a couple (9) beers. Peace

That's ok, nine beers in my book only amounts to a couple. A couple more and its an even case, unless you go for the thirty packs...

It essentially behaves as though it were an external hardware synth. I haven't used it for quite sone time, but Geeve is correct. You need to record the output from the MS Wavetable synth as audio. What-u-hear(or Stereo Mix or Wav, depending on your soundcard) should work.
It is much easier to use the Edirol Softsynth( or any soft synth for that matter). Read through tutorial #8 on how to install softsynths. Once you have it inserted in your project, direct the MIDI track inputs to Edirol.
Then, when you export, it will be a much cleaner affair.
I am sure you will have many more questions. Don't be afraid to ask. You have stepped into a powerful but confusing new arena.
    ps:24 beers in a case, 24 hours in a day...coincidence?

    Tomasball:

    1) Highlight all your MIDI tracks.
    2) Go to EDIT>BOUNCE TO TRACK
    3) Set the Output and Input of the Soundcard (Wavetable would be inserted)
    3) Bounce the MIDI to a new Audio Track

Are they audio? Rename the audio file to something easy to remember, instead of "Track 5 Guitar Take 13" name it "My Song" or whatever the song is called.
If it's MIDI, it's not audio, so WMP can't find the non-audio file. It would need to be converted to audio first.
