Sound cards

Hey everyone,

I'm looking to get a new soundcard. Somewhere between $50 to $100. I have a soundblster live 5.1 and am looking to see what people are running. I have had no luck with the on board AC97 due to latency and my soundblaster has a broken input. Any thoughts. I kinda checked out Audio interfaces but don't know enough about them. Any thought or links anything. Thanks.

Geeve

I was very happy with e-mu 4040, or is it em-u 0404, whatever, but I would also suggest a card that installs inside the computer as opposed to a usb card. Stand by, you will probably get a few more responses.

My SB Extigy is 4 years old, and knowing now what I didn't know then, I wouldn't get it.
Are you going to be recording audio only? Do you want to incorporate MIDI data?
Some sound cards don't have MIDI sounds, so you would have to use a software synthesizer such as Edirol to make MIDI sounds, or route the data through a MIDI keyboard.
Look for any post by Beagle, and click his link to some sound cards.

Thanks guys. I did some research and I think I'm going to go with a USB audio interface. I can select it for my input in cakewalk and use the soundblaster as output and midi. I found a line 6 model that was made to work with both cakewalk and Cubase And hell it's only $69.00. I drink that in a week But I do appreciate it. It also runs on ASIO Drivers so they say that latency is non existant. Plus I just got a new computer so it should run things pretty quick. I'll post again once I have played with it a little.

The LIne 6 model wouldn't happen to be the Line 6 Toneport GX model would it? I hope you're not running Media Center Edition, because it will crash your computer, and you'll end up losing all your audio playback drivers, and CD burning drivers. No joke! It happened to a friend of mine not to long ago. Window's Medai Center is a lot like Vista. IT CONFLICTS WITH ALMOST EVERYTHING AUDIO! I had to do a full system restore just to get all his drivers back.

No it's not a media center edition computer. I thank you for the knowledge though, yes it is the toneport gx. I built the comp. out of a Dell optiplex. It was basic as it came, then added soundcard, video card, hard drive, Ram and windows XP Home edition. Then had to add a new Proccesor, BIOS and all the drivers. It was built from nothing pretty much. I've heard bad things about media center. The computer itself was a salvage from a company that was cleaning out there office and giving away their old pc's to make room for new ones. I pluged the line6 up late last night and all is well. I have to say it was a great investment. I got the audio to run at <1 millisecond. I haven't played with the amp sims it came with but I may, haven't decided yet Thanks again for all the replys and thatnks again for the warning Shred!!!

One word of caution with USB devices, USB uses CPU power to process, and if you have several USB devices attached they will compete for power. USB can work well, but tends to be slower than Firewire and PCI options. Also if your computer has the older USB 1.1 buss and the new device is USB 2.0 it will restrict and run at 1.1 which a a tad slow for running the more powerful synths Or rendering audio. There are plenty of folks who have great success with toneports, and also plenty that have issues.

I'd Seize the day but i can't quite reach it!
