Wavelab not recording audio since upgraded to E-Mu 0404

Hi, I've just upgraded my sound card to a usb E-MU 0404 and since then, Wavelab (V4) will not record audio although plays it (at the same time, Sonar 6P records audio OK and drivers are shared). I have followed the FAQ on the E-MU support site about this but to no avail.

Has anybody any clues as to why Wavelab now fails to record audio?

Cheers, x-andra

Click on the New Session Button in Patchmix. There is a preset for using Wavelab. I have to use this for Audacity as well.
It handles the routing in Patchmix and works like a charm. Remember which session you are using for your other recording purposes, as you will probably want to change it back when you are done with Wavelab.
I'm not entirely clear on what happens there, but it has to do with the routing of the signal inside the machine.
btw, that's one heck of a commute

Edit: I didn't catch the usb part the first time. I don't think you have patchmix with that.
Do you see anything that looks like a what-u-hear type of option? Basically, you want to get the wave output sent to an input. I think they simplified the interface and you don't quite have the flexibility, or complexity we have with patchmix.

Got it recording audio input via microphone - bit depth was the problem there but still not recording music played through the 0404....

and btw as emu 0404 comes with wavelab lite, maybe there's some issue there??? i dunno, but given it comes with that, it must be able to work in wavelab, right? do you need to specify in wavelab which audio card to use - if you disable onboard sound will that force wavelab to see the 0404? try switching driver modes too...

Have done all that....wavelab is using the EMU drivers My version of wavelab (4) is maybe not able to use 24 bit but it does do 16 bit.

What I don't understand now is why Wavelab can record the 0404 output (from mic input) but not the 0404 output when the computer plays an mp3!!

    any more clues?

dunno but i'd guess something to do with how you have 'patchmix' configured, i know i really struggled when i had my 0404 to work it out. but how do you mean, 'record the output'? you mean you can record directly into wavelab via the 0404, but you can't just drag an mp3 file or use file>import (or whatever the command is) to import an mp3??? or are you trying to use something like wmp to play the mp3 and record this output into wavelab?? i'm a bit confused...

    I confess I don't know what Patchmix is - i don't have this.

I can record directly into wavelab from my mic. I plug the mic into the 0404 and wavelab records me.

When my pc plays an .mp3 (using, say, winamp) and I ask wavelab to record it - nil.

I am confused because my previous setup did this no problem. Wavelab used to record just whatever was going through the sound card (an Audigy).

ah sorry i see you have the usb 0404, this doesn't come with patchmix...but you don't need to record an mp3 into wavelab, you just import it as an audio file. cos what ur doing is having a file play in ur pc, it goes up the usb to the 0404 then back down into the pc for wavelab, which is pointless. as i say, just import ANY prerecorded audio file straight into wavelab, as i say it'll prob be under the file menu, or even a shortcut button. you can obviosuly record into wavelab but it's not designed to be a sequencer, just an audio editor, mainly used for mastering finished mixes in our context....

THanks - I appreciate all the help so far. Why I'm trying to get wavelab to record an mp3 is that it's an mp3 streaming in from the internet (it's not on my pc yet)! So I cannot just open it via the file/open menu. I have to record it first!

ahh i see is this a legal thing??!!! you'll prob need to use cables to do this, ie link the outputs of ur 0404 to the inputs physically then record that input into wavelab, if you can't do it in the 0404's internal software...

Hi...I don't think there are any illegalities about what I want to record. I'll contact E-MU support and see if they can advise as well as trying what you say.

    Thanks

I think I found it. Unlike Patchmix, the USB version works with the Windows Volume Control.
    From the manual. p35:
Can’t hear Windows Media Player in Windows
If you have, or ever have had, another audio device installed in your PC, you may
have to set the E-MU 0404 USB 2.0 as the “Default Audio Device”.
    1. Open the Control Panel, then select Sounds and Audio Devices.
    2. Click the Audio tab and select the E-MU 0404 USB 2.0 as the Default device
    under Sound Playback.
    3. Click the Volume button under Sound Playback and turn up Wave volume.
You cannot record or monitor ASIO and WAVE at the same time. The first audio
application you open controls the E-MU 0404 USB 2.0.
    Lost Communication
Should you lose communication between your E-MU 0404 USB 2.0 and an audio
application (Ableton Live, Cubase, Sonar, etc.), the E-MU 0404 USB 2.0 drivers
may need to be re-selected in your application.
    1. Go to your application's I/O settings, de-select the E-MU 0404 USB 2.0 for
    both input and output.
    2. Apply these changes and exit the dialog.
    3. Re-enter the application's preference settings and re-select the E-MU 0404 USB
2.0 drivers. If this doesn’t work, the application may need to be restarted.
This is a bit different from what I am used to, but it looks like it will get you going.
