record 2 midi channels at once?

Is it possible with sonar HS 4 to record 2 separate midi channels at the same time? I have the M Audio audiophile usb box, and an old(!) midi patch bay. Everything works great, but I'd like to be able to record 2 midi instruments simultaneously. I dont see that as possible with my midi patch bay. Am I missing something or is it only possible with some sort of 2 into 1 midi interface?

You'd need a second MIDI interface, like a MIDISport 2x2 or you need a MIDIMerge device that can take 2 inputs and send it through 1 MIDI Out.

or use separate midi channels in a multi-timbral synth like dim pro with different patches/sounds on each

Thanks for the suggestions. Now, the midisport would take the place of my patch bay for those times I want to rec 2 diff midi channels? In other words, it isnt midi out into my soundcard, right? To be clear, I play roland v drums, and my friend plays keys, so it would be nice to rec midi from both devices simultaneously, not just midi from me and audio from him (which is how we've been doing it) One more question: if I had the midisport connected to usb, and my soundcard connected to usb, can they co exist? Could I then record 2 separate midi channels AND 1 or more audio tracks thru my audiophile?

they should happily co-exist....for this you would need a 2x2 unit, and be careful setting midi channels etc as the drums would prob need at least 8 channels...

So you have the midisport midi interface and the midi interface in your usb soundcard? It should work. Im using two midi usb interfaces, an edirol and a turtle beach, plus the midi interface in my maudio sound card. They all work simultaneously; I can record midi from two keyboards plus midi drums, on three channels on three separate midi tracks, + audio output from the drums and two keyboards on three more audio tracks all simultaneously.

    I am not an expert

kayehl- sounds like the way to go! Since I would need to use my soundcard anyway, I guess I just need a 1x1 usb midi interface; the midisport might be overkill. Nice to know you can record multiple midi channels and audio tracks simultaneously.
