Intel or AMD?

Considering building a system.
Big Quad AMD or Intel?

I know Cakewalk didn't support AMD in the past but are they all OK now?

I think you got some misinformation there.. Cakewalk was always cool with AMD

    Big Quad AMD or Intel?

I would go for the Intel Q6600. The latest drop in prices made the Intel Quads very popular ... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115017

No need as you see it to go to a 2.8 or faster?

I will watch this thread with interest. I too am considering the same decision. I think that this will turn into one of the "chocolate or vanilla" outcomes. 6 of one, half dozen of the other type things.
Lets find out as the thread progresses......

    Sonar 6.2.1 / Pentium 4 2.6Gh 3.0Gh Memory / MOTU 896HD / Wavelab 5 / Behringer Truth B2031A Monitors / Tannoy PBM 6.5 Montiors / YAMAHA MOTIF ES 8 Keyboard/Synth 22" widescreen Samsung monitor + Mitsubishi 19" regular flat screen.

I don't have a quad. But my Intel core 2 duo is rock solid. I couldn't ask for a more stable system. Last time I used AMD was like 5 years ago, so cant comment on those.

Ive been using AMD for around 5 years now (i think - since AMD Athlon 64's came out)..

I think they are great processors. Ive never really had anything to compare them to. But with the right setup, they run very solid, without any glitches..

The only reason why I went AMD is because I dont really like to go with "The Norm".. Hence the reason why I chose AMD over Intel, Sonar over Cubase and Protools, and the reason why I DONT own and IPOD..

Nothing wrong with AMD... Sonar has always worked with AMD processors.
At the moment, the Q6600 is a good choice.
    So +1 on Al's advice...

I used to use AMD, now I use Intel. I can't say I've had problems with either one. From my experience, the major concern is the mobo, chipset, memory and drivers rather than the actual CPU.

On a side note, if I were to buy a new PC today, it would without a doubt be an Intel Quad.

I see that everyone agree with going Intel these days (I didn't even bother saying why..hehe.."popular" helped me typing less...) ..the performance of the Duo 2 Core and now the quad is really something you can't beat..these CPU's scream!

One thing I don't like is using their retail heatsinks-
I've seen some high temps when using those..not sure if Intel got it by now. It seems there are (were?) some specific problems there like a non flat surface therefore bad contact with the CPU which leads to higher temps .. I also agree that it's not so easy to install heatsinks using the recent Intel design - the 4 pronged fasteners are not making it easy and you're not sure when they're really all the way down in place.. I still didn't break a motherboard when pushing those down but I felt once like i'm about to break something there.. a distinct "click" noise is missing there..the whole area on the motherboard squeaks and sometimes you're not sure if "it's there yet".

also the way they grip the heatsink..well, it could be better ..read about those problems here -

AMD has been struggling in the market every since Intel came out with the Core 2 Duo. AMD just can't compete head-to-head when it comes to performance. Even based on AMD's pre-lease info about their quad core, it appears that Intel is going to remain the performance leader for the near future.

AMD does have one advantage in recent chips: energy consumption. AMD chips are more efficient and might be easier (and quieter) to cool. For us musicians, quietness is a serious consideration! Unfortunately quietness isn't an easy thing to evaluate when shopping. I have heard few musicians complain about noise with Intel chips, so you will probably be fine with Intel.

In the end, whether AMD or Intel, these days you get an amazing amount of performance for amazingly little money.

Cooling isn't an issue anymore... go liquid cooled. Way more bang for the buck. Everything will run like it's on ice and you won't need any more fans than you've probably already got.

    frozencpu.com baby!

The prices have really come down on liquid cooled cases.

I've been a fan of AMD for a long time, and usually recommend them. However, Intel has really taken the lead lately and the Q6600 is killer. I'm sure that the tides will shift again, which is actually good for consumers. There needs to be both of these to have fair pricing, and faster advancements.

I'm running a AMD 64 3400+ (I know I'm a PC guy and am in the stone age, so what!) and it's been great for me. However, In Sonar 6 , I don't really push it like most of these other guys do. I have BFD drums, record bass, guitar, maybe a vocal, maybe a soft synth and that's it.

I had gone through the same decision making two years ago. My conclusion was that INTEL provides more throughput for multimedia (audio/video) then AMD processors, as two companies invest in needs of different users or another way of saying would be: they don't compete in every field of processing.

What I'd do, decide your budget and pick one INTEL and one AMD processor in that price range and check their benchmark tests that are similar to what you are going to do, here:

The Core2 Duo/Quad run fairly cool... (unless you overclock them )
So there's no need to go with water cooling/etc.

Maybe its just due to my tendency to resist change, but I've always used Intel. I've found their chips to be great.

    Both good.

Intel Q6600 is the best bang and is ridiculously good.

Get one with G-O stepping a lil more money, but runs cooler.... Im about to get one
