specified collection did not contain any audio data

Sorry, I'm a beginner with LE. I recorded some voice in LE and wanted to add a sound effect on a separate track at different points. The sound effect was simple: I entered a single note, patched it to a "acoustic guitar" sound. In LE, playback yields perfect results. Yet, when I attempt to export an MP3 file, only the voice track is recognized; the sound effect from the other track is not. I've been searching for an answer/solution to this for hours, and I'm at my wit's end (rather disappointed that nothing in the on-line help seems to address this and clarify what it is I'm doing wrong).

I tried selecting the track, going to Edit, selecting "Bounce to Track," and I get "The specified collection did not contain any audio data", which obviously seems counterintuitive to me, as I made that sound in LE, and when I play it back within the application, it certainly is "audible" to me. I'm sure every idiot beginner (like myself) asks this over and over again. Is there an easy answer?

Thanks!

i'm guessing the "effect" you're talking about is a midi note being played back by a soft synth, right? if this is the case you need to select both the midi track and the audio track associated with the soft synth when you bounce to track.

hit ctl A to select the entire timeline. click the midi track. hold ctl and click the synth track to select multiple tracks. then bounce to track. hopefully i haven't completely misunderstood your situation.

tjw194, thanks for taking the time. Maybe it's easier explained by describing what I'm trying to do. I've managed to get my new Samson mic to work with LE. My goal is to produce a vocal track (strictly spoken text) with periodic aural cues, like a bell sound, to highlight certain portions in the track. I've had no problem recording my spoken voice. Next, I thought I'd need to add a new track, and on that track, I just wanted to create a single sound (like a plucked string) so that I can paste and copy that sound event below the vocal track in the places where I need it. I've managed to make the sound, paste it into a second track multiple times, and when I test the result by playing it back, it sounds perfect in LE. Except that when I attempt to output to an MP3, the second track (with the plucked sound) is completely ignored.

I don't want to waste your time... I'm not usually this clueless in figuring things out, though I find it odd that LE would play something for me, and then be unable to process that data for an output file. I'm sure there must be something I'm doing fundamentally wrong. If you have an idea, I'd send my amorphous best wishes wafting over into your domain. Thanks again!

i'm not sure if that'd be a good thing or not

ok, so the data in the second track is audio...so are you really trying to bounce to track or just export the project? the only thing i can think of is that you don't have the second track selected when exporting. check to see if the outputs of the two tracks are routed to the same place. try going to edit-> select all and then export. pay special attention on the next window as to which sources are selected to export.

I am sure that that is part of the problem. My voice track reads: Output to SigmaTel C-major Audio; my "sound effect" track reads: Microsoft GS Wavetable. The problem is: there IS no "SigmaTel" output option available in the effect track: I can NOT change both outputs to be the same.

I am really going completely nuts here...

Well.... if you still have an idea, that would be mighty nice! I'm about ready to give up on this whole thing.

Microsoft GS Wavetable is a synth for playing back midi. so the track must be midi after all, right?! it's the generic midi playback device built into windows.

do you have any other soft synths you could use? basically in addition to what you have, you need an audio track with the input set as whatever soft synth you are using. read up on MIDI in the manual especially the parts about converting midi to audio.

    Zippidy,
You can't bounce the output from the Microsoft GS Wavetable. What other programs came with your bundle? You may have a soft(ware) synth that is easier to work with than the Wavetable synth. It can be recorded, it just takes a bit more footwork.

Thank you, to both of you, tjw and RobertB; your responses gave me some ideas. What I wanted was extremely simple: make a sound in LE and be able to use it for creating an audio file. In response to what both of you now wrote, I looked around for some freeware to convert MIDI files to audio files, found one right away, made MIDI files of the sound effects I created in LE, converted those to audio with this freeware, popped those files back into LE, and voila, it FINALLY works.

Thank you both, again! Does LE really have no tool for converting a MIDI track to an audio track?

Does it have a bounce feature, thats how you convert it.

What you want to do is extremely simple, if you are using a softsynth. You would use the Bounce to Track function that we mentioned. Just a couple clicks, and you're done.
With the Microsoft GS Wavetable synth, you have to go into the Windows Volume Control, set the Recording Input to Stereo Mix, set up an Audio track with Wave as the input, and record the track in real time. Kind of a pain.
That's why I asked what came bundled with your software. You may have something like Edirol VSC, which is a basic soft synth that is very user friendly.
LE itself is a decent program, but it needs something to work with.

even if you don't have any soft synths available to you now there are free ones that you can download and use within LE. then you could use the bounce to track feature that you were trying to do originally. maybe someone else could offer some suggestions for a free one to try. i've never looked for one and don't know one off hand.
