how in the world I did I do that?!

this might sound stupid, but I was recording a solo and I did something I can't replicated. I tried to do it again for half-hour but with no success. maybe some guitar guru can help.

here the file http://www.esnips.com/doc/fb00a10d-676f-42cf-8188-0d0203124d78/taking-over

I' m talking about the last note when I got down the scale really fast and then bend what I think it's a C at the 5th fret. I got that screaming/whistle I can't replicate. how do you get that?

thanks a lot

PS: I already know some smartass here is gonna start laughing at this thread.

It sounds like a 'thumb harmonic'. It's something that used to be used a lot back in the day, though I don't hear it so much these days. If you let your thumb hang off the pick so that it just grazes the string after it's been picked, it'll create a harmonic type of sound. If you hit it just right, and you are playing through a cranked up amp, that harmonic will be distorted and interact with other vibrating strings and create that kind of whistling scream.

definitely...also called pinch harmonic apparently though i believe i learned it as a ghost harmonic.

you accidentally muted the fundamental (same idea as the true harmonics you get on the 5th, 7th, 12th frets etc.)

guys! that's awesome! it's like how you said. I have been practicing it. but it takes a bit to master and do it consistently. I discovered this just randomly!

I don't think the first guy to do it worked it all out from theoretical physics, either. Most inventions are accidents, at heart. Only inventors who want to pass as geniuses pretend otherwise -after all, nobody respects a lucky idiot, right?

First person I ever heard do one was Roy Buchanan - Jeez, he can rip em out without batting an eyelid... actually, I don't think I ever saw him blink... even once.

Listen to LaGrange by ZZ Top. There's a whole solo of practically nothing but pinch harmonics.

When I was starting to play guitar I was listening to a small number of guitarists, as is often the case, and Robbie Robertson of The Band was the first guy who I remember doing that quite a bit. Eventually I read an interview where he stated that he learned it from Roy who back then was still relatively not well-known. Over time I came to notice other things that Robertson probably got from him. Buchanan and Steve Cropper were two of the most influential guitartists of the 1960s who many folks didn't really know much about. And, FWIW, all three of those guys were identified by their white Telecasters.

Yeh, Robbie Robertson did it a lot, to omuch sometimes. If you watch The Last Waltz, he uses it quite a bit on various tunes from across their career.
