Major Track Bleeding....no simple fix

Ok, I've got MC4 on Windows XP, and I was having a little bit of this issue with MC3, but not this bad.

I've run through all the basic crap.....making sure the right things are selected to record from and such. I'm recording through the Microphone (which is selected in the recording properties) but I've still got bleeding from my metronome (which would be SW Synth if I'm not mistaken). I also have major bleeding from my other audio tracks, and the only way to get rid of them is to mute them while recording, which isn't always possible ( as I need some of them to play over while doing vocals/overdubbing).

What's wrong?

By the way, I never had these issues when I first used MC two years ago, so I'm thinking it's something that I keep adjusting that's making it worse, but I can't figure out what it is. If I turn down the SW Synth, the metronome bleeding stops but I can no longer hear the metronome or my MIDI tracks, and if I turn down the Wave, the track bleeding from my audio tracks stops, but I can't hear them either.......it's very confusing.

Realtek AC97 Audio (the standard Windows XP soundcard). I haven't had the money to upgrade (or the knowledge to install a new one), although I've heard it might be a wise idea. Why?

because some sound cards like soundblaster have a "what u hear" function which basically records everything coming out of the speakers. windows does the same thing with the realtek

did you clickon the link I provided above? RobertB has an excellent tutorial on how to fix that problem with the windows mixer - just click on the link for that thread.

    axl,
Please don't blow off the thread that Beagle has pointed you to. These are ground zero settings. If you are still gettting bleed, your headphones may be leaking or, worst case, the sound chip is falling prey to its own RF emissions. In that case, a different sound card is nearly essential.
Do you have any other hardware in the chain that you haven't told us about?

Realtek is not a standard windows sound card, it is a on board chip that some motherboard makers use, there are two or three more popular chips out there. None of which was designed with multitrack recording in mind. While most of these will do a decent job when setup properly, it is much like running the Kentucky derby on a burro! You might finish, but you just can't win.

Nope, no other hardware, and I've consulted that thread multiple times to make sure it wasn't something simple...because I know the constant barrage of track bleed threads gets annoying.

How much do decent sound cards cost, and what does it take to install them? Remember, I have Windows XP and I'm on a slight budget.....

Okay after reading you first post again i realized that you have the WAVE turn on in the sound cards applet, so as to be able to monitor the tracks, that is what causes it to bleed over, it literally feeds the whole mix back into the sound card. Turn that off and go find a small mixer that will allow you to monitor the mix from the mixers headphone jack. Then all will work better. A decent mixer is around $59

axl, I had the same problem with the same card a while back. If you open the Windows audio control and select options>properties from the menu, then choose line/mic in the mixer device field you will open the recording properties for the inputs. Mute the stereo mix channel and your bleeding should stop. I do agree with the other post in the thread that the built in sound will only take you so far. You will eventually want to get a sound interface that is better suited to recording.
