sonar3 to sonar 2
My friend with a very nice studio is working with me to get my home studio together. I have Sonar 3 studio, he has Sonar 2.2. When he bought Sonar 2.2 he was told he needed to buy a program to save bun files and to be able to burn a cd ie. (EZ CD Creator). I am able to save bun files with my cd burner just using Windows XP, (and maybe Nero) but it looks like just Windows XP was all that was needed At the session today (at his studio) his computer could read (and it looked like load) my bun files, but after the blue bar had gone all the way the right, the dialogue box said "this is not a cakewalk file." So he sent me home with a bun file that he created from Sonar 2.2 through EZ CD Creator to see if my computer could load it. I assumed my computer could load it. (it is a later version of Sonar) But not only could I not load the file, When I tried to "look" at the disk through the "my computer" icon, it showed nothing on the disk. 0 bites free...0 bites used, and no file names or information whatsoever. Aren't bun files bun files? Shouldn't we be able to load and play each other's work? I've been using cakewalk 3.0 for about 10 years now. And now I love being able to play my guitar and sing and then copy and paste like I've been doing with midi tracks for years. But I also want to be able to hear his B3 with a real lesley. He has been having a little trouble with his cd burner, but he also has a cd rom that gave him the same "not cakewalk file" message. We appreciate the help. Reguards, Wayne

Sonar 3 files are not compatable with Sonar2.2 files? Even though they are both .BUN files? Also, my .BUN files showed up as .EXE files.

Sonar 3 files are not compatable with Sonar2.2 files? Even though they are both .BUN files? SONAR is downward compatible, so 3 will open 2.2 buns 1.0 buns and even PA9 and below wrk files. However because of the bussing system in 3, SONAR 2.2 cannot open buns made by 3. Upwards compatibility is pretty rare in software. Also, my .BUN files showed up as .EXE files. I take it that you mean the icons showed up as .exe files? If that's the case then it's more to do with the configuration of his machine. Just for your own, and his safety, you should both adjust Windows Explorer in the Tools/Folder Options/View panel and make sure that the box 'Hide extensions for known file types' is NOT clicked. That way you'll see the true extensions on any file. Sounds to me like your buddy's CDRW is toast. HTH

You'd be best-served at this point (until your buddy gets v.3 to simply exchange the track audio files back and forth and import/export them as you work.

Well, it can be saved in OMF format, just like if it was going to be used by another app. Ultimately your friend will be goaded into S3 soon enough. Just make some tasty tracks with the tools 2.2 doesn't have, and he'll make the move quick time!

Thanks alot for all the help everybody. He did call cakewalk this morning and has S3 on the way. Also, I don't think his RWCD is "toast," but It does need to be better "in the loop." He's looking into that. The Wayneman

Hey, don't hurt yourself there! Well Jeez! After reading some 5000 posts here and contributing as much as I have, one would think that it would be automatic to remember that.

I've been using Cakewalk since HS 3 back in '93. I wish I had the original floppy disks -- it'd be cute to load the old program up! "Hey, where are my DirectX effects?" Shayne

I still use cakewalk 3, on my "powerful" IBM 486 laptop for stage. It works great for live. I just can't get myself to go with a minidisc. I'm already boarderline karaoke, that's as close as I want to get at this time.
