Need help with setting up FW-1884
I just picked up a used FW-1884 and I am trying to get it configured and working with Sonar 7. So far I have gotten it set up, drivers loaded (both Sonar and FW-1884 drivers), and I have midi and audio working, and I have it set up as a controller in Sonar, but I cannot seem to get the controller functions working.. none of the buttons/faders seem to be working.. Can someone help me with some basic guidance? What mode should it be in, Native/Mackie etc..? How do I enable the contoller functions? (I haven't used any controller functions before so this is all a little new to me). Are there any tricks, something basic that I'm missing? I didn't get any documentation with the FW-1884 and I'm downloading setup and owners guides off the tascam site, but the only sonar specific info seems to be for Sonar 2?? Help would be appreciated. Thanks. Craig

Congratulations on your purchase. Select Native wherever you are given the choice. First, press the Computer button on the FW-1884 to set it in the correct mode (not MIDI or Mon Mix). In SONAR, you have to enter that you have an external controller. It's more straightforward in SONAR 7 than SONAR 5 or before. Options, Control Surfaces, then yellow plus sign to Add a control surface. It should read Tascam FW-1884-1, and the InPort and OutPort should both say FW1884 Control. Are your LED lights lit for Firewire, Clock and D In? Do you have the newest driver, 1.60 and the newest SONAR driver 1.22 beta? Yes, the SONAR Control Surface PDF on Tascam's website is written for SONAR 2, but it contains all the info you need for SONAR and is appropriate for all versions up to 7. Read it carefully. Good luck!

RioJazz, thanks for the quick update.. I'm running 1.50 and 1.21... all seems to be set up except the D In light doesn't come on but I'm not using S/PDIF.. all seems to be OK but nothing is working... any suggestions? Should I upgrade to 1.60 and 1.22? It seems to me that there must be something more basic wrong here... ? Craig

I agree, it's something more basic. The older drivers would have still worked. Unless: Are you running Vista? If so, perhaps you should upgrade to 1.60. I don't know about Vista, but that was the stated purpose of the 1.60 driver. Oh, yes: no SPDIF, so no D In light is OK. What did you select for the clock? Internal? And the obvious. Do you know for certain that this used unit functions correctly?

Riojazz. FIXED!!! Thanks a lot!! it wasn't set to FW1884 Control in the inport/outport.. just fixed this and it's fine!! Thank you.. One other question... I use VST's and MIDI for all of my songs, and the faders get allocated to audio track and then the midi track... is there any way to eliminate assignment of a fader to the midi track, so the faders are just assigned to all my audio tracks? Man, Ive had my FW1884 for years now, and I never once thought of not having a fader allt to the midi channel of the vst. That is really a good idea! Is there any way to do that? That would save a lot of back and forth swithcing.

There may be, but I don't think so; I never tried anything like that. If I had that problem, I would reorder the tracks so all the audio tracks are adjacent. That way, the MIDI tracks could be on one bank, and the audio on another. Do you know about the Bank controls on the FW-1884? You can have 8 faders at a time, in sets of 8, by changing the bank. I'm glad you're up and running. It's a great unit. One word of caution: there's a thread or two where you can read about a modification to the mic inputs. The basic warning is, never connect or disconnect a mic while the phantom power is on, since it can blow out a channel. The modification is supposed to improve the quality of the input as well as make it safer. Newer units have the modification built-in; the serial number of the cutoff point is in that thread.

Riojazz, thanks for the tip regarding the preamp.. will try to keep this in mind... and check the serial numbers to see if I have or don't have the modification.. Regarding the ordering of tracks.. I tried creating/adding the VST in a folder hoping that the FW-1884 would only address the main track and not the tracks in the sub-folder.. but that didn't work.. I guess I'll have to do what you suggest and reorder/separate the audio and midi tracks... (the other option would be to delete the tracks altogether)... Thanks again for the help.. !! Craig
