Free SSL InterSample Peak Meter

From their website:

X-ISM is a state of the art VST/AU plug-in which can interpret inter-sample peaks, allowing engineers to make informed judgements about the resultant sound quality of the mix.

There is currently a trend in the in the audio industry known euphemistically as ‘The loudness war’ in which the engineering process is driven to produce a product which is as loud as is technically possible within the constraints of the medium. Debate rages as to whether this produces problems that degrade and distort the audio. One reason for this distortion is often blamed on the presence of ‘inter-sample peaks’, where signals that are usually missed by the Fs sampling of DAW meters, may actually exceed 0dBfs in reconstruction from digital to analogue domain in some Digital to Analogue Converters (DACs).

Sign in and enjoy!

Thanks DonM! While I generally shy away from a lot of free plugins, I welcome the opportunity to try some stuff from SSL.

It appears there is a free mic compressor plugin available also.

The talkback compressors been around for about two years - I think I posted about that when it became available - I have put this thing on a couple of my two bus mixes - OMG it is scaring me to death. Tarsier - where are you when I need you - is this thing the real deal? If it is - I'm going back to school - Love it!

    Wow Don,
You've got your Master volume at -7.4 with a peak at -6.1 and you have analog and digital clips?
I tried it on a master track with peaks at -0.2 and I had no hits on the meters...

Edath you should follow Dons link and read the blurb about the plug-in.

I put a limiter in line and it all clears up - but what a telling tale.

What about setting Ozone's limiter's margin to 0, and turning on Ozone's "Prevent inter-sample clips" function? Does that function really do what it says it does? (according to the SSL meter)

I really want to try the SSL plugin out, but I have virtually no time these days. Massive project with deadline looming...

    Hello,

Do what I do. I download every free plug that someone recommends into a free plugs folder. Inside this folder, Each plug (or set of plugs) is in it's own folder with copies of documentation and screenshots from the site. I have 165 folders with 709 files of plugs and documentation. However, I never actually install any of this stuff. I just collect it. Makes me feel good that I'm not missing anything but avoids the muss and fuss of installing all this junk into your DAW host. LOL.

OK...I now have to retract a statement I made in another thread. Geokauf, that was actually a highly entertaining and useful suggestion. Free plugins can take up so much time and cause so much trouble if one doesn't exercise self-control. So far I have just avoided them for the most part. But a 'placebo folder' just might be the ticket to satisfying that free-plugin urge without the loss of valuable DAW stability.

Glad you checked in - the digital and ana peaks begin to show clips if I move the limiter on OZ towards dbfs - it works I guess. Nice plug as far as I can tell.

I think your illustration gets the point across although the SSL one did as well, for me anyway...
What I'd like to know, and maybe DonM can chime in, does this mean as long as you use a limiter, you're safe from these "inter-sample peaks"?

EDIT...OK...I see a few messages above he got clips while adjusting the limiter...

This is why it's dangerous to follow the common practice of setting your limiter to brickwall at -0.1 or -0.3db. If you leave 0.5 to 1db of headroom, intersample clipping should never be a problem. At least, that's always been my operating theory. I have downloaded this plug to test that assumption.

    EDIT:
Confirmed my previous assumptions, that as long as you leave 1db of headroom, it's almost impossible to cause inter-sample clipping.

    Hey Bit,
It appears in Don's first pic, he has a peak on his master at -6.1 with lots of inter-sample clipping, then he straps on a limiter and with peaks of -0.3 has no clipping,
then pushes the limiter harder and makes it clip again. I tested it on tracks with -0.2 peaks and had no inter-sample clips.
Very interesting...and something I will be using in the future!

Yeh, that doesn't even seem possible, does it? How can the reconstructed wave be 6db above the highest sample? I've tried to imagine a scenario for that, but cannot.

I tried to force intersample clipping with an especially dense piece with lots of high-frequency content, but the only way I could do it was with an extremely aggressive setting on Ozone's volume maximizer and an upper limit of -0.1db - not a typical scenario at all.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Use a limiter and lower the ceiling until you don't get them anymore (somewhere around -.5dB - 1dB).
