Randomizing/Humanizing MIDI tracks - plugins??

I am trying to make some MIDI music sound less "computerised", so I am looking for plugins that can do this. The closest I have been able to find is the "Humanize" plugin at Frank's midi plugins... http://www.midi-plugins.de/index.html. It is good for randomizing note timing and velocity, but I have no understanding of statistics so I can't work out how to set the parameters. And I would really like a plugin to be able to randomize note timings but have chords in midi tracks all stay in time... eg. - for piano tracks. If I randomize the timing of a drum track it turns out ok, but tracks containing piano chords sound pretty awful. Any ideas??

Sonar Home Studio has randomize for velocity and timing by the way.

I'd say just experiment with the randomization. Or take it from the other direction. Play it in with a controller and if it's too sloppy in the timing partially quantize it, say 60%. For me that makes it pretty tight but retains a humanized feel. For drum tracks I get midi files that were played by a drummer so they are already humanized. I then modify them to fit my song but I do that by cut and paste and move with the 'move by' enabled in the snap to grid (not the 'move to').

As fep said, in Sonar there are midi effects for velocity and quantizing with randomize functions. You insert them just as you insert audio effects but on the midi channels.

Yes I do know Sonar had these functions. But like I asked, is there a way to random-quantize a midi track, but still get all the notes in chords to start at exactly the same time?? Kinda tedious to edit the chords manually after randomizing.

I don't know how to do that but what about 1) playing the chords on a separate track or 2) in the piano roll view you can select ranges of notes with click and drag on the image of the piano keys and then apply the randomize to just those selected ranges.

I have purchased and used Frank's MIDI plugins. I think they are pretty good for what they do. if you don't understand the distribution curves, then just use his presets and then look at the MIDI event data to see what has changed after you apply it. then you'll get a better feel of how to use the parameters.

look into the groove quantize feature, you can use it to play with the feel of a track without randomizing stuff.

Ahhh thanks... the bummer is I only have Home Studio - no groove quantize feature in HS :( Well, I did need an excuse to upgrade!!

I think the quantize midi effect has a groove setting as well.

No it doesn't, unless you mean the "swing" parameter...

    finrod,

this sounds interesting to me: an option that does not randomize the single notes of a chord, but randomizes the starting time of the single notes of a chord in the same way.

I have to think about it, but this might be a new feature for a future version of the plugin

Why not clone the track. Track one, do your quantization or whatever (and delete the chords). Second track keep the chords and delete everything else?
    Would this work for you?

I did try some software a few years ago, I think it was called style enhancer (or something like that) but I could never seem to get it to do what I wanted, so in the end I just paid more attention to my playing.
