Adobe Audition 3

It looks like AA3 went live in the past 24 hours - complete with a downloadable demo:

http://www.adobe.com/products/audition/

Has anybody taken the plunge yet? $99 to upgrade from any/all previous versions. I'm curious to see how the VSTi/MIDI features function and/or otherwise stack-up vs. Sonar.

    midi?

Well, saw a piano roll in the video demo - but you'd have to have some sort of MIDI support for VSTi.

The stereo pan in the demo video caught my eye. Wonder if it works the way I'd want one to work?

it seems to me that every development to make Cool Edit pro more than a waveform editor has been a downgrade.

I have Cool Edit and Audition 1 and 2 licenses... it just keeps getting less focused and has never caught up to Wavelab.

I'll be getting it next week. The MIDI features are totally irrelevant to me, because I only use AA for its excellent wave editor. But that feature has been significantly enhanced with the addition of the heal tool. Photoshop users will be familiar with the concept.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

The heal tool sounds nice... but the competition's draw tools have been out for years and in my mind are more useful.

I don't care much for the heal tool in Photoshop either... I like the rubber stamp and judicious hand work.

FWIW I was in AA2 a few minutes ago editing for zeros at the edges on a clip I intended to "groove" ... I use AA a lot but wish it had a draw tool like Sound Forge and Wavelab.

I have 1.5 but for $99 the upgrade is a bargain.

Sensible pricing by Adobe. At last.

In photoshop it's a cursor tool that automatically analyzes the surrounding areas of a blemish and more or less lets you "photo retouch" in an automated way.

It's not the preferred way to fix a photo for pro work... it's more of a sweatshop tool for hi volume production... think class portraits, team sports portraits, etc.

The older rubber stamp tool provides most of the functionality with the caveat that the users st and may make decisions that allow for even finer restoration.

With audio it's much harder to analyze and fix blemishes without having noticable artifacts... the heal tool may actually out perform hand edits in this application.

For example; last night I was trying, in Audition, to remove the sound of a key return on a single C3 note sample I made off a grand piano for a TV spot we did 2 weeks ago. I could not satisfactorily remove the "bump" and get a smooth transition along the decay.

I had to search out another sample. I was thinking to myself... I wonder how the heal tool would work with this?

    Mike,

I like your comment about "unfocused." They're trying to appeal to too many audiences.

I think the enhancements in AA3 related to VST and MIDI have no appeal for Sonar users. But I do like the improvements for removing noise from live recordings. I've had mixed luck with that in AA2.

I forgot how much I like Cool Edit 2000 (w/bonus packs). I had to install it in order to install AA 1.5 upgrade. I like that Sonar 7 offers CE2k as a Wave Editor option/link via dropdown menu. I wish AA 1.5 and AA3 were likewise accessable in S7.

I prepaid $99 for AA3 to have a Vista supported version in hand for when I move to Vista. Adobe implied that $99 was a limited time discount prelaunch rate -gone the day AA3 hit store shelves. That's why I signed on.

Does this mean I'll have to install CE2k (if it will install on Vista)? then AA 1.5 (if it will install on Vista)? so that I can install AA3 on that Vista machine? ridiculous

    Hi Leonard-

You can add pretty much any 3rd-party tool to that drop-down. The procedure is simple and well documented here if you do a search, but post back if you have any problems or questions.

Sonar Utils 3.02, works in Sonar 7. Moments ago I used it to add Adobe Audition 1.5 to my list of Wave Editors.

FWIW-Cool Edit and Adobe Audition 1.5 were not able to read the wave files sent them from within Sonar 7 at first.
This was cured by checking the "Share Drivers with other Programs" box in the: Options/Audio/Advanced window.
