Cakewalk Instruments...What's next on your wish list?

Here is mine.

1. Drum Synth (or synth+sampler)
2. FM Synth
3. Slicer (or upgrade Dropzone with this function would be fine by me)

Drum module which can read Battery 3 kits ('cause I already own Battery 3 and it's a great piece of software), and with a built-in drum-centric sequencer like the MPCs, Linns, and 809 Rolands. Fully integrated with Sonar and Project 5.

Full-on vintage synth module with sound quality and graphics to rival anything by Arturia or GMedia.

Edit - Sorry, one more: Rhodes - all flavors, including DX-7 Rhodes. Must be comprehensive and sounding of the highest quality.

There are already so many drum and synth VSTi's out there that are either really inexpensive or even free.

Let's work on getting a good, INEXPENSIVE guitar simulation - something that does what EZ Drummer does for drums. I know about Lyrical Distortion, which is very good, but expensive and CPU unfriendly, and SLAYER 2, which works for simple things, but just isn't real sounding enough.

Or is this pretty much impossible??

An fm synth would be neat with 8 - 10 operators that you can choose waveforms and route where you want them to go. 2 operator fm synths or ones with preset routing defeat the purpose imo.

A vintage modular synth would be neat. again lots of oscillators per voice with selectable waveforms and usable as audio range or LFO. selectable filters, amps, envelope generators, that allows you to add more and route them where you want them to go.

Or an additve synth that lets you construct 'snapshots' of the frequency spectrum, then morph from one snapshot to the next over an amount of time that you input. The snaphots could be constructed with sine waves one by one, or with a template for standard overtone series for formants like female voice, oboe, cello, xylphone, and also other waveforms could be substituted for sine waves to make it fast & easy to construct complex overtones quickly. it would also need filters to find and remove nasty high and low frequencies that might occur.

of course i can probably already do most of that with the synths i have, if i just dug into them deeper.

A full fledged sampler with different ranomizable layers per velocity setting and ability to assign midi keys pressed down to change sample library to another so if for example the preset samples were guitar strings you could assign the sampler so for as long you held down C-1 (where you would have no guitar sound) it changes to your "muted guitar" samples or slides or whatever you'd want.

    lfo's, step sequencers, envelope generators

I'm climbing back on my soap box and requesting fractal based modulation control
sure it's impossible to visualize what's going on, but the patterns can provide a less fixed, less machine-based feel in the way they roll along

    1. There is no drum synth other than nPULSE. I think Cakewalk can do better than that, and I think they could do it better than a lot of the ones out there. .
    2. There is no straight FM synth, just synths with some FM functions. I think Cakewalk could create a very good one that is better than the others on the market.
    3. Where in SOnar 7 is there a drum synth, an FM synth, and a slicer? Not a REX player, but something you can slice up samples yourself?

I haven't looked at that in years, but I don't remember being able to add/delete/move slices. Just starting points...

You actually do the slicing in Sonar's loop tool and rearrange slices in Cyclone.

Ah, no wonder I never bothered with it. Yeah, so something new and better would still be welcome then.

I want all the old Cakewalk instruments to get a revision.
Consolidate the user interfaces a bit... clean them up. And, add some new features to each of them.

    z3ta+ 2
    Pentagon 2
    PSYN 3
    RXP 2
    Cyclone 2

And, I'd like to see a better Arpeggiator MIDI FX plugin.

    That's pretty much it.

I've mentioned before that Rene should make a monster FM synth. I also think it would be cool if the next version of Rapture could have some of these features:

    1. Wavetable synth features, like PPG Wave, Waldorf Wave and the more modern Kubik where you can sweep an editable wavetable.
    2. Graphical wavetable editor where you can load a different waveform (.wav or .sfz) into one of many slots. If you load one waveform into slot 1 and another at slot 16 (for example), Rapture can automatically create a smooth 'morph' between these two waveforms.
    3. Easy to use wavesequencing - a variation on 2 but no morphing is needed, the lfo, envelope, etc. can step through the different waveforms loaded into its slots for Korg Wavestation type sounds.
    4. True Pulse Width Modulation, there is a workaround on the Project5 wiki but a proper PWM would fatten up sounds, nicely.
    5. A built in graphical .sfz editor! I know a lot of people here have no problem using Notepad to edit sfz files but I like a graphical interface, especially when doing keymapping. This would be great in Dimension Pro, too.

Rapture is a truly fantastic synth, the modulation options, effects, etc. are incredible. What I feel needs more work is the oscillator section. There is not that much you can do with the 'raw' sound of an oscillator before it goes to the DSP section. Breathing life into the oscillator would move it from 'fantastic' to 'God-Like' with over 10,000 hit points!

I'm doing this kind of stuff with PureData. One could even try to route PureData's midi output to Project-5 using MidiYoke. I'm planning to go a little further and buy Max/MSP so I can compile Max patches as VSTi's.

Whatever Cakewalk makes next, I just hope it's not based on the sfz engine. Rapture, Dimension Pro, DropZone, they are great but sound very same-ish, so do Pentagon and z3ta+. Sure, they all have different features, but their oscillators, filters, and effects are basically equal-sounding.

Maybe an FM synth wouldn't be a bad idea at all. Or a physical modeling synth, in the lines of the Yamaha VL1. Something that's not sample-based.
