Upgrading to Sonar Home Studio XL?

Hey guys (and gals),

Haven't been here in a while but I'm looking for some insight. I'm thinking of upgrading to Sonar Home Studio, but want to make sure I can do everything with it that I can do now with GTPro. My assumption is that Sonar is more robust, but want to make sure before I invest the cash.

Has anyone done this?

Some questions I have: Will Amplitube LE work with Sonar? Will all of the free VST plugins i've spent hours dowloading work? Will my GTPro projects convert fully to Sonar?

Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Geo.

    Hi Geo,

You'll get everything you have in GTP and more. You should have no problems with using Amplitube LE it works for me and yes all the VST's should work and the projects convert back and forth between the DAWs without issue.

In all it will be a win win situation for you.

I made the conversion last April and then stepped up to Sonar 6 SE and then on up to Sonar 6 PE soon after that. No problems at all.

Thanks, DR. That's exactly what I needed to hear. Is it worth upgrading directly to SE or PE, or will HE XL be sufficent for now? The price tags on SE and PE are pretty steep.

I think you'll be fine with SHS6XL. It provides quite the bang for the buck and will get you to where you want to be. The Sonar 7 SE and PE editions open up unlimited tracks, V-vocal pitch correction (personally I don't use it, I use Melodyne instead) and some other nifty tools that are nice to haves but not have to haves. The PE edition also adds in additional VST Instruments and plug-ins as well as surround sound mixing. If you aren't looking to do motion picture scoring or 5.1 production mixes it's just plain overkill.

The music I am working on (finally got my studio up and running) I intend to present in both 5.1 and stereo mixes. It's the only reason I have Sonar 7 PE. Otherwise I wouldn't have it.

The other nice thing is that Sonar 6 & 7 (SHS, SHS XL, S7SE & S7PE) support OMF for file compatibility with other DAW platformsso you can swap files with others who might be on ProTools or Nuendo and such.

    Geo,
I second what Doc said. SHS6XL is a real powerhouse, and offers phenomenal bang for the buck. The program is solid, and if you have good plug-ins, you are good to go.

Thanks, Robert and DR. I just picked up a copy of XL today. One quick question, do I have to de-install GTPro, or just install XL? I'd like to keep GT Pro in case I want to use it again.

    thanks,
    Geo.

    Geo,
You can leave GTPro installed. The programs can coexist just fine.
All of the versions in my signature are on the same machine. The answers to any questions you will have are just a forum away.
