No way! I just bought those same monitors earlier this week (early Christmas present from my wife). Funny thing is, I was planning on buying the new JBLs with the room compensation, but after listening to them I wasn't that impressed with the sound. So, I asked the salesman to fire up the Yamahas (my second choice) and was blown away.

Yeah, i originally went to GC for the KRK 8's. I had heard them before was was pretty impressed for the price. So i go in there and see that they also had the Yamaha's set up so i asked my guy Kevin (he's been my sales rep at gc forever here in san diego) if i could hear them and he said no! lol

He said that if i heard the Yamaha's, i wouldnt want to mix on the KRK's! lol so i finally get him to A/B the KRK's and the Yamaha's and HOLY CRAP was there a huge difference.

The Yamaha's had tons more clarity and sounded much more realistic. Crisp highs, mids and tight low end, really flat sounding, nothing seemed to be exaggerated. I was sold! Man it really helps when you can A/B them like that.

I also love the room correction controls, they really help with dialing in to your room specs. Also in my room, they sound exactly like my beyerdynamic dt70 headphones! I cant wait to start having consistant mixes!!!

Have you ever owned NS-10's? If so how would you explain the difference between the two models?

Nope, iv never owned the infamous ns 10's, but from the reviews and yamahas product page, these are supposed to be the next best thing!

Im still amazed at how flat these things appear to be.

I think i heard a pair of ns 10's like 6 years ago when we recorded our 2nd album over at Studio West, alittle place north of San Diego.

According to ads and reviews they're supposed to have all the good points of the NS-10s but they have improved on the bad points (high-mid harshness and lack of low-end extension/articulation).

The reason i asked is that i have NS10's that i bought years ago and never ever really liked them - but i kept thinking well if these suckers are used all over the world they must be good - it must be me! Even though i know their sound very well, i'm at the point where i need something with more depth / clarity and low end articulation. I'm a bit over the one dimensional sound of the NS10's. Hence my interest in the HS80's - they're not a bad price and if they are flat with more depth and low end clarity i'm going to try em out for sure. Thanks.

Nice, i wana hear yours and you wana hear mine! lol

Ok, here's what we do, we send each other our left speakers! lol

So are the ns10's powered, or no? And they have a 10' woofer right? hence ns10...not ns8? lol You'd think that they would have more bass response with the 10' speaker.

However, yes, these are supposed to be less harsh on the ears and have more low end. There are cool room controls on the back of these things, for adjusting highs, mids and lows and room compensation. Since mine are close to the wall, i was instructed to drop "room control" by like -2db. This corrects the low frequency exaggeration caused by reflections. dropping to -2db lowers all frequencys from 500 and lower down 2db.

Some people talk about a "hiss" that comes from the speakers when they are cranked, however im running mine 3/4 open and havent heard any hissing. even at 3/4 open, i can only turn my firepod up to the 10 o clock position. (7 o clock is all the way down) Basicly im saying these things are really loud.

Unfortunatly these are my first and only monitors though. I a/b these with some others at gc, but iv never spent any time with monitors to really know how these stack up with the others. but i do know i love how they sound and that they were worth every penny!

Actually no, they're not powered and the woofers are only 6.5".

Yeah would be really cool to swap a speaker for a day and compare! Oh well, San Diego to Melbourne is a hefty freight bill!

Thanks for your info, í'm going to go and check em out.
