Hey Tom, semi-psycedelic mood going on with a mysterious dark feel to it. Vocals fit the music perfectly. Good work Tom.

Yeah, like this song alot... Got a little twisted early Peter Gabriel vibe with the synths and the heavy percussion... love it.

The lead vocal needs some mix help, though. Sounds like the lead vocal track is stereo and panned slightly left? It's also a little low relative to the backing tracks, all of which makes it feel "buried". I would try playing with making the vocal mono and bringing it dead center, and bring the level up 1.5-2dB. It'd be cool if you could get a vocal mix that sounds like it's originating from inside the listener's head... oooh... spooky. Mono centered will help with that. You can also play with limiting the amount ambiance on the lead vocal (delays and reverb) to give it very close feel. Other than that love the mix on the backing tracks and the backing vocals.

I read a post the other day and someone (sorry, forgot who) was giving advice on "soul" and they mentioned not rushing a song....this is a good example of why not to rush a song....too many loose ends...unfinished thoughts...too much sound and not enough space...in the end lacking soul or "A soul" is better verbage. The vocals are lacking to say the least here but this was pretty much a first take (an hour or so) and I'm still spending loads of time playing with buttons and effects and asking (and hopefully answering) questions. Still had a ball laying out the tracks and love feedback knowing it's lacking. I'm sure I'll tidy this up some down the road but alas it was a self-induced rush job and I just wanted to share it.

Mixing the vocals (as off as they were tone wise) was trying....At first I used the classic "telephone" effect on the mains but it became hard to understand, then I cloned the track and they came out front a bit...but I wanted to beef up the last line "and aimed ...with a grin" so I took the effect off the second lead...which made it more understandable but less spooky......the panning to the left was out of frustration....and not getting what I heard in me lil head lol

I will work with the mono setting after I redo some vocals. Still learning but enjoying the ride for sure, and one thing I did learn.....I need a good mike!!! Thanks again for the insight!!!

I can definitly hear the Floyd influences on this song. Good man! Dark & moody. Nice use of instrumentation to keep this tune interesting. I like, but you knew I would.

I like your shed. I can't imagine why, but you rarely hear any discussion on the benefits of corrugated metal as an acoustical treatment. Nice tune, Tom. Nice textures. Looking forward to hearing the last 30%.

Tom, WOW! That was very interesting sounds. I listened to both songs-Suprise Suprise and Nieghbor. Very interesting mix and textures. Very well put together and properly mixed. I guess I need to take some of that stuff your on, so I can get a little more creative myself. Thanks for sharing. John

    many thanks!! 2007/11/19 19:30:08 (permalink)
I've listened to all your songs (in fact I added you bitflipper) and it amazes me the different angles people use to express themselves...pop, jazz, rock....its all here! and I'm not at all blowing smoke here...but it only takes a lil while of FM radio surfing to see what's coming out for public consumption is weak at best. A few years ago I started buying used vinyl and it opened up a whole new world for me....so between dusting off some greats of the past...and being here on the cutting edge of creative minds.....I am humbled to hear the great work done here..and I am honored to be able to hang out here….of course I've been thrown out of everywhere else I've been, so this is a great starting point ;)

Thanks again guys and keep up the great work!

    Hi Tom,

Great tromping groove. Nice use of vocal incidentals.

Once suggestion: I'd pan the right tom a little more to the center. Perhaps put it at around 20-35%. It seems too strong and takes the precussion off balance to me.

Perhaps raise the vocals a bit and the pad synths too.

This is going to be a very nice song (well, it already is.) But with a few small adjustments it will polish up nicely.

Matt- will do on the vocals....I knew they needed work for sure....silly question what is "pad synths"? I used loops for the kit and for the burping synth line and some effect-lines....the rest is guitars as I don't own any keys...did you mean go up on the "burping synth" line?

    Thanks again!

Doh! I listened to the wrong one the other day when i listened to and commented on your other track. Er, so now i'm listening to Neighbours.
Nice vibe, it drifts along really smoothly and the ethnic vocal samples are perfectly incorporated. Sounds excellent just like that.
Read my post on the other thread as regards this track...it'll actually make sense now.
