Well, Jim, calaverasgrandes, and riojazz, and all chiming lurkers ... thank you very much for you thoughts and writings:

I just ordered the AKG K701 for only $248 (with shipping) at Abe's of Maine.

Theoretically, after breaking it in for 100 hours or so ... it may help me to mix and master intricate sounds more hyper-precisely
... with less pain on the outer-ears
... albeit as an adjunct to monitors, speakers, etc.

I hope you don't regret ordering from Abe's of Maine. They don't have the best reputation: http://www.resellerratings.com/seller_rating_history.pl?id=2003

I always check an online reseller at www.resellerratings.com before ordering. It's saved me several times.

For comparison purposes, look at the scores achieved by Newegg and B&H Photo (two of my most trusted online dealers):

The AKG K701 are very nice, top-notch and @ a good price $248 ideal for mastering.

For anyone on middle-of-the-range (average) budget, the AKG K240 Studio @ $98, is excellent bang for buck!! Great quality! Good enough for mastering! The Sennheiser HD280 at $99, with the closed back are perfect for mic/rec-monitoring situations.

Have just gotten AudioTechnica ATH-M40fs (80 Euro or about 100 USD). A really good choice IMHO!

I use a couple of sets of SONY 7506 for tracking, but I use the Alessandro One headphones whenever bleed isn't a problem. The Alessandro cans are modified Grados, are open-air, and are available for $100. Everyone I know who has tried them has bought a set. Alessandro makes other more expensive models, including one with wood cups.

The comment about tracking with the Shure in-ear E2s intrigues me; I'll have to try that. Right now, they are just connected permanently to the iPod.

That's what the Shures were originally designed for, believe it or not...live performance and tracking for professional musicians...that was before iPODS. ;-)

I had a pair, and they were great, though a wee bit harsh on the highs until I broke them in. Heck, even the Grado SR-60s are better sounding than a some of cans mentioned in this thread. Grado's deal is eliminating unwanted resonance. They look funny but sound great. BTW, though the Senn HD-280s are nice for TRACKING, IMHO, they are not a great listening phone/mixing phone at all. If you own a pair and think that they are, a quick listen to a pair of $69 Grado SR-60s will change your mind right quick.

Best,

Mark

Whattarush, my Radio-shack wireless costed more than the ATH-30s ... how long is the cord?

It's about 8-10 feet long, I don't remember the exact length but it's more the enough for me. If you paid more than $69.99 then yeah your wireless was more but trust me, these cans sounds great. I let several people listen to them and they all say the same thing that I did, "they sound like you're listening to your monitors with the speaker right in your ears".

I'm sort of surprised to see so many posters mention mixing using cans. Most advice I've read says not to do that, to use monitors. I have to admit, I used to mix with cans since I didn't have decent monitors, and when I go back and listen to them, they're not the best; too much reverb especially.

Nowdays, I sometimes listen to a mix with phones, hear something that sounds great, then take them off and listen on my monitors, the stereo and the car and it sounds like crap. So I mix on monitors (Event TR8's).

just curious how people handle the difference between how things sound on speakers vs. cans when they mix/master.

Lots of different advice and lots to choose from - here's my experience:

Sony MDR-7506 for tracking

Sennheiser HD-650 for mixing

Both are good, but for pure sound the Senn's beat the Sony hands down - that's why they cost over three times as much.

Beyerdynamic DT770's

SUPER flat, velvet cushions, light weight and has a frequency range of 5 to 35k!!!

After trying the sony's, akg's and sennheiser's, the beyerdynamic's were the best hands down to me =)

Another cool thing was that after watching a few movie production videos and music dvd's (like behind the scenes making of stuff), iv seen alot of studios use these headphones!!

RE: Which Headphone(s) to Buy? 2007/11/21 11:29:17 (permalink)
sailorman - simple answer is whatever works best for you in the situation you're in.

Personally I start mixes on cans for cleaning up tracks, EQing and dynamic effects (compressors, gates). For me, having the sound being "injected directly into my head" helps me hear detail I may miss otherwise.
I EQ individual tracks on headphones mainly to eliminate any colouration of the room (as my studio acoustics need some work...)
Once the individual tracks are done, I switch to monitors for balancing levels, panning and time-based effects (reverbs, delays).

I switch back to cans for reference, particularly if doing stuff like V-Vocal but what you gain in focus, you lose in terms of spatial awareness and dynamics - cans don't compare with sitting in a real room facing a pair of speakers for how most people will hear the end result.
Though it is possible to do complete mixes on headphones - particularly if you don't have a good room or good monitors - combining both is my preference.

IMHO, great cans are the first essential studio purchase after your 1st decent vocal mic.

This is a really good article:

Just out of curiousity: did you test the Senheiser 650's vs. the Beyerdynamic, or something like the Senheiser 280s?

RE: Which Headphone(s) to Buy? 2007/11/21 12:25:36 (permalink)
Well i lucked out the day i went into gc to buy the headphones, they had a ton set up to listen too!!!

i had originally narrowed it down to the Sony Pro MDR-7506's and the Sennheiser HD280's. At the time, the beyerdynamics were out of my price range

i tried the Audio-Technica ATH-PRO5's, Sennheiser HD280's, Sony Pro MDR-7506's, AKG K 141's and the Beyer's. Now looking back, it seemed like they had the most "popular" headphones out on demo.

after listening to all of them, (popped in Strapping Young Lads "the new black" album) the beyers suonded the most accurate to me and when i found out what the sale price was, i had to get them! the sony's did come in a close 2nd though.

Too late, I ordered: If fails I'll resort to my MasterCard 'Conditional Credit' ... hopefully the headphones are packaged brand-new! AGK itself (I think) is responsible for 1 yr warranty. (Thanks for the heads-up) $250.00 seemed worth going for it.

just curious how people handle the difference between how things sound on speakers vs. cans when they mix/master.

I do my mixing in my bedroom in a building, so acoustics are not ideal, and my monitors are mid-level Yorkville YSM-1.

So, not to disturb too much the neigbourg, i do most of the mixing in my reference headphone AKG 601(by the way, they have an almost similar response to the more expensive 701).Also, i can hear noise problem more easily.

From time to time, i switch to the monitors to hear 'real life' results, as most people listen to music from speakers, not headphones.

A mix sounding good on my monitors will sound good in the cans, but not necessarily the opposite.

For exemple, the AKG can deal with a lot of high end details with what sometimes may sounds like an unpleasant thin and harsh sound on the Yorkville. Also, the bass frequecy need to be pushed a little harder on the speakers to be heared compared to my headphones, where they are more present .

I feel a mix sounding nice in the monitors will translate easier to other sound system then those worked out from only headphones.

So,the monitors have the last word on my choice of mixing.

I'm a devoted headphone user: I love to use them for recording & comparing mixes. I have the following sealed headsets: Sony 7506, AKG K271, Audio Technica ATH-M50 and an older discontinued JVC HA-D810 (very respectable for $). Opinions will vary & it's hard to find a place to listen. The AKG 271 is ranks vg with the ATH-50 a close second.

Many members have mentioned other preferred selections -- I just have tried them.

Take care -- David

I think you should try and search the forum, some of the people here really know what they are talking about, do a search for ATH-M40fs and see how many hits you get it is awesome, they come higly recommended.

I for one love them and I have several pairs, my son is using them at college studying Music Technology, you can easily do 8 hours with these on it seems you never get tired of wearing them, and you can actually do mixes on these while the family are sleeping, then do a check on your monitors later and see if anything needs changing

Just my 0.02p of course.
