Firewire Vs. USB

Would you reccomend a firewire audio/MIDI interface over a UsB one? I've been having lots of driver issues that have been rebooting my computer and im wondering if i should convert to firewire.

First Firewire is better just because it's true peer to peer in that the devices can communicate without much help from your compter so it's lower CPU impact. USB (1 or 2) is host based and uses CPU power from your comptuer and requries some type of computer to do anything.

However, today with the dual and quad core computers the norm it may not matter as much because there is CPU to burn. So we are starting to see some new USB 2 interfaces on the market, for a long time all the new ones were Firewire or USB 1.1 (yuck). That being said it seems to be easier for developers to get Firewire working well and the drivers for most of them are fairly good. Some of the USB drivers are very poor. Even with firewire things like automatic sample rate changes don't seem to work on most external interfaces like they do on an internal sound card. But all told Firewire is the best in many ways.

In about a year, they will be unveiling USB 3.0, with throughput in the range of 5Gbps.

yes, but it took several years for USB2.0 divices to come out with good drivers. I would be shocked if the manufacturers had solid drivers to take advantage of USB 3.0 specs from the start.

One thing to consider, with firewire on laptops with a TI chipset becoming harder to find, USB 2.0 device might not be a bad way to go for a mobile setup. If I was in the market for one I'd look at the MOTU with USB. This way, if I need to add mic pre's I could with ADAT on their units. I wish Edirol would add that to the UA-101!!!!!! They have solid drivers, that work with Sonar and all Cakewalk procucts
but their mic pre's arn't the best

firewire is worlds better than usb. if you use usb, you will not be able to record as many tracks with near the same quality. also there will probably be problems with clicking, popping and latency

    I'd recommend anything over USB.
