Equipment path decisions

I have a 24-channel mixer with 8 sub groups and a stereo main mix. The 8 sub groups and main mix connect to the PC and can be recorded using SHS.

I have a nice(ish) pre-amp and one dual channel compressor. I have been using the compressor as a channel insert, accessing it via a patchbay so I can insert compression into any mixer channel I choose to record on. I have been running guitars etc into the pre-amp and then into the mixer.

Could I use the pre-amp as an insert? My concern here is that I will be using the mixer built-in pre-amps and not the specialized pre-amp. Also, the pre-amp has balanced circuitry, but the insert loop is unbalanced.

Should I insert it on a main channel or sub-group channel?

that would be a concern of mine as well. i'd rather not use the mixer pres especially if they don't have balanced inputs. is there a reason you're needing to do this as opposed to what you've been doing?

Convenience. I'd rather plug in, then use my patchbay to connect whatever I need.

Ah, makes sense. you could try it and just use your ears as a judge. the main reason balanced is better is to keep noise floor low. of course if the pres are much cleaner on the nice(ish) unit, then you might not have a choice - I'd just try it and see how it sounds.
