Two Questions: Jingles and $/hour...

Hey,

1. Any suggestions on breaking into the jingle/commerical production for my local area. Some of the stuff I hear on the radio is surprisingly unprofessional. I had thought about contacting radio stations, but I know that they produce commercials themselves in many cases, so they're actually serving the same market as I'd like to. That would leave marketing straight to businesses themselves I guess...?

2. Anybody know what the rates are for something like this?

HP Z220 Workstation I7 3770, 8 GB RAM, Windows 10, Sonar Platinum, RME Multiface II via PCIe, JBL 4326 w/sub, AvanTone MixCubes

    Googling 'jingle rates' brings up quite a bit of info, like these;

    http://www.josselynjingles.com/rates.htm

    http://www.waterfall440.com/rts202.html

    I did some a long time ago for local radio, I charged £350 for 4 jingles ($700), which I thought was a fortune back then (late '80's)

    Excellent info...that's great. I absolutely LOVE doing this type of thing, but have actually done VERY little of it...actually just one commercial years ago for a local Celluar One. I swapped out a year's service for the ad...LOL!

    Thanks!

    Contact all the local marketing firms in your area. Here in my neck of the woods, there are lots of smaller independent companies that produce sales/marketing campaigns for other businesses (and even local communities). One of the songs I produced here earlier this year is in heavy rotation on a local Elgin TV station. You can see the TV video here:

    A lot of that radio stuff you hear is produced in local studios! I sat in on a session a couple of years ago when one of my clients got tapped to record a song for a radio station up in Wisconsin. The DJ came in and recorded her voice and made it sound like she was right there in the station (theater of the mind man :-)

    I have no comment about the rates though. You can charge whatever the market will bear in your area. It will depend on what it is you are producing and for who. I don't think there is a rate set in stone. In fact, you might consider some pro bono work just to get started. Good luck!
