Critiques Welcome

Hi all,

First time I've posted anything here, so let me know what you think if you have an opportunity to listen.

http://www.soundclick.com/donnyocollins

Can't Get Up, Wrong or Right, and I Never Knew are about 16 years old, some of the first ones I ever wrote. The others are within the last three years, the most recent being The Simple Prayer, almost two years ago.

Not my most recent mixing efforts, so there are things I'll get around to going back and brushing up on, but let me know what you think.

Donny

    Hey, Donny!

Just wanted to let you know that I tried to listen, but I keep my DAW pretty lean. Flash players just don't work on it.

    Hey,

Thanks for the tip. I didn't think about that.

    Hi Donny,

I listened to 'Simple Prayer' - very nice job on this. Well together song, nice arrangement, particularly the piano.

Couple of mix nit-picks, that snare-brush sample is a little irritating after a whgile, you could maybe knock that back in volume and soften it down with some reverb.

Through headphones the bass sounds really heavy, I had to turn the song down to compensate, but that could be my ears..

    Good song, good job though!

    Hey,

I've updated the link on my OP to go to soundclick. Hopefully that one will be better.

    Thanks!

Good stuff, Donny! "Certain Days": a good mix, and nice panning - makes for good headphone listening. Nice piano work. Pleasant blend on the vocal harmonies.

No nits to pick, but I would suggest one thing: because your stuff is piano-centric, you might consider varying the piano to give each song a distinctive flavor. Possible variations: a brighter piano patch, a de-tuned honky-tonk patch, an electric piano/Wurly/Rhodes, wide-panning a grand piano, putting a chorus on the piano. As a piano player myself, I'm aware that many people get bored with piano quickly, even when it's as tastefully done as yours.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

    Hey,

Thanks very much for the feedback. I certainly appreciate it and I'll give that a try. This stuff tends to happen in cycles for me but I'm trying to get things worked out so I can be a little more consistent as far as writing AND recording goes.

    Thanks!
