Realtek ALC889A

Anyone ever use this card? Is it any good? Comes in Rain Solstice 02. Stupid question, but, as a sound card, does it just play audio or can it record as well from digital sources, i.e., is it an "interface?" I've only ever used Firewire interfaces, so please excuse the ignorance.

Correct me if I am wrong but I am pretty sure this is an onboard card. In my use I have not ran into any Realteks that are actual a "card". (as I almost took a hammer to my keyboard this morning to disable mine...I use it for a cheapie game talk mic)

Some onboard cards can record analog or digital and can be switched via software to either input type of signal. So it would fall within the "Interface" catagory. Most though you will find are analog only input type.

However many onboard cards are designed for "general use" in my opinion, while you can use them as an input for recording many "general use" circuits you will find are not the greatest for recording great signals. There may be some out there that do, but I have not ran across one yet.

In the long run if you have one of those firewire devices I would definately go with that for recording anything, rather than the onboard card.

    hope that helps a little.

Very helpful, thank you very much. I just find it fascinating/irritating that a dedicated DAW company would hawk it with their DAWs on their website.

I think it was listed as more of a spec of the motherboards onboard devices...don't think they were really pimp'n it.

From what I saw on thier site from the other thread, it was more of a DAW machine that the Realtek just happened to be there because of the moterboard used in the machine.

Yeah, I can see that, AI, thanks. Wishful thinking/ignorance on my part. Oh well.

    Thanks again...
