M-Audio ProjectMix I/O

Equip:
M-Audio ProjectMix I/O
M-Audio Octane 8 Preamp
M-Audio Bx5A Monitors
2x MXL Tube Condenser Mics
2x Alexis 1 ch. EQ
Sonar 7 Producer Edition Bundle

for starts.

Issue:
I am having an issue with getting CD Quality out of this.
44.1khz may be CD quality, but it does not sound like it on any of my recordings.
It is moreso on vocals than instrumentation.
It is becoming an annoyance.
I spent 10 grand on my setup and I'm running into problems.
I've had it for just over a year now.
Anyone have anything?

It looks like you have everything you need there to get great sound. It's not a gear issue. How is the mic connected ?

    Mic >>[7 PIN]>>Tube Preamp>>[XLR]>>ProjectMix>>[Firewire]>>Sonar 7 PE

I've used one of my other condensers [ Non-tube ] with a direct XLR cnctn.
    Still same very shallow sound.

I've put them also through the EQs and have also bypassed them.
Still, I get the shallow almost PC Mic sounding tone.
If I can get the same sound out of a $5 PC Mic, then something is wrong.

Could this possible be an issue with the FW cnctn?
It doesn't run through my soundcard at all, both rec and plbk are through the PM I/O.
My soundcard is a piece of ****, so its best that it doesn't, but I'm 100% positive that this should work via firewire.
I've heard samples from just the PM I/O as the primary equip [ without the Octane 8 ] and it sounded great.
    I don't know what's wrong.
Yes, I have disconnected the Octane, and have had the same effect.

    1. Does your setup have Phantom Power? And if so is it switched on?

    2. Have you tried your two microphones, with the cable you are using, on a known working setup? If nothing is available, go to a GC or music store and ask to plug them into a Mixer to test them.

    3. Are you sure your ins and outs are matched? For instance do you know you aren't mismatching impedences? You are sure you don't have the inputs/outputs set to line levels...such as the mic input isn't switched to line level?

    4. Can you detail your signal path here?

    If you haven't done so...

Setup your Hardware M-Audio ProjectMix I/O for 24-bit / 96 khz and your Sonar Producer to both record and playback on 24-bit / 96 khz.

Remember that record is in Options > Global > Audio data > Record bit

And.. for playback is in Options > Audio > General

I personally prefer to record in the highest quality settings for recording because it just sounds tons better! Then I'll mix down from there.

If I record in 44.1 khz, it just does not sound as good as from when you mix down from 96 khz to 44.1 khz.

The main reason I bought Project 5, and Sonar Producer 8 was because Music Creator 4 could not record anything higher than 44.1k

Recording in 44.1k sounds muddy compared to recording in 96 khz! Also, once you hear something recorded in 96 khz.. your 44.1k will never sound as good.. ever again! Just listening to 96 khz ruins your perception of sound quality for anything less!

96 khz is also known as the DVD quality standard.
