Sonar won't use all my RAM (3GB)

I have 3GB of DDR400 memory in my DAW. Windows recognizes all of it but Sonar will only access up to 2.08 GB and then says it's run out of memory when I try to load another VST. Other apps sometimes have the same problem so I think it's either a hardware or Windows configuration issue.

Sonar 5 PE
WinXP Pro
Asus A8N-SLI
Athlon X2 4800
3GB DDR400
Audigy 2 Platinum
GeForce 7900GT 256MB

Windows XP will only use 2 gig. There is a swtich you can set at bootup to let "some" programs use more if they are designed to do so but I have no reports that is really works. You won't get real support for more then 2 gig till you go to a 64bit OS like XP 64 or Vista installed in 64bit mode.

For now all you can do is try to freeze some VST tracks to fee up memory or use ones with lower requirements.

You need to set the 3GB switch in your boot.ini file...
And you need to be sure the apps are Large Address Aware.
Laatido can be used to verify and enable/disable LAA

2GB is all you'll get unless you go to Vista64.

Of course, if SONAR ate up the whole 3GB there'd be nothing left for the operating system, and that would suck.

I'm curious as to how you're eating up 2GB. Multiple samplers?

Keep in mind that not all "out of memory" errors are actually indications that you're out of memory. A program bug may cause a stack overflow, which is often reported as a generic out-of-memory error. If your GDI memory is exhausted, that, too may be reported as out of memory even though you have plenty of RAM left. See how much memory SONAR is actually using; you may be barking up the wrong tree.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

It's all the VSTs I'm using. I usually have 15-20 large samples loaded at a time (East West Orchestra, Choir, Ra, Stormdrum) so I run out fast. You mentioned Vista64 - I would make the leap to 64-bit in an instant if I knew it would benefit me that much. What about XP64?

I think my current problems would be fixed if I could just stream from the HDD but for some reason I get weird anomalies (stutters and dropouts) that I can't pin down. I thought about RAID for streaming but I don't want to use up precious cycles with software and a controller is too expensive. On the up-side, I finally ordered a 1010LT. GOODBYE AUDIGY 2!!!!!!!!!! With any luck I'll find out that the Audigy is causing all my problems and everything will run like it's supposed to now... oh please oh please oh please

I'd steer away from XP64. Its not officially supported by Cakewalk. If I were doing I'd go Vista 64.

Ah, yes. Those big samples will do it to ya. Sounds like Vista64 will be your only hope. Good luck!
