You're in the wrong forum - look in the gear section. This topic has been discussed quite a bit there already. A quick search should produce more information than you can shake a sitck at.

    What's a reasonable price? $100? $1000? $3000?

What will you be using the mic for? Just vocals? Vocals and acoustic guitar? Drums? Amp cab? Wildlife documentary sound tracks?

Give us your budget and what you intend to do with the mic, and we'll suggest some appropriate mics in that price range.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

bitflipper is right as usual. Your informational needs might not have been covered over there. If you do post another thread there (after searching through the many posts) be specific about what your intentions are and maybe even add some info about your current setup, budget, skill level, etc. You almost can't provide too much information if you want an educated response. Good luck!

    Thank you!

    I am wanting a mic to record vocal/acoustic guitar mainly........maybe a horn

I would like to keep it at or under $200.00

I know that if I could spend more it would be better. However, this is just a stepping stone to acquire better equipment.
    Thanks!

$200 is not much to work with. I'd buy an sm-57 and sm-58. If you can work on saving up $1k you will have some killer options that will last you a lifetime. High-end mics usually have a decent resale value too so you really can't get hurt too bad. For acoustic guitar you can get some great sounds with a nice pair of small diaphragm condensers. For voice you will probably want to go with a large diaphragm condenser. Good luck.

see you over in the gear section, I had to post though-- I highly recommend NOT BUYING a sm57 or 58

there are lots of small diaphram, or large diaphram condensor mics such as the Audio technica dual pack AT 2020 and 2021 for the exact amount you mention

Studio Projects B3 is right in your price range... and will do a very good job on acoustic guitar and vocals.

If it was me, I'd save for a Shure SM7b. I'm certain that some will disagree but you'll always keep it no matter how high end you progress to.

It will record an acoustic quite nicely. You might have to use some EQ to get it right where you want it but learning your tools IMO is also a great thing.

It's an excellent vocal and brass mic.

I'll second the Studio Projects stuff, fantastic sound / dollar ratio. You could also get a pair of the B1 for that and be able to do stereo.

+1 for the Project Studio.. I have the C1 and that's really a good mic..
be aware that they capture a lot of your room, so it's a must to know something about mic placements, mic patterns,..

and from what I heard/read.. you might also (in addition) use a ECM8000 for the guitar..
all the condenser mics need phantom power, but I guess you know that..

(eh, Frank I wasn't replying to you.. I am sure you know that²)

yup....Studio Projects B3 is a great cheapo good sounding mic. I actually prefer it over my Rode NT2-A for some vocals.

The AT 2020 are great on acoustic...very very bright (as most AT mics are IMHO). Depends on the type of coustic and the strings...sometimes you can get TOO much screachy string sound...
