RE: virtual percussion and drum kit

I use SONAR LE and my PC runs on a clock speed of 2GHz, sys ram 1GB, got 40MB left to play with.

Can anyone recommend any CW or 3rd party software that I could use that will let me do percussion/drum tracks in real time using a keyboard controller? I basically need softwared dedicated to realistic percussion/drum kit sounds.

Thanks.

I have a PC with a clock speed of 2GHz, 1GB of system ram, and 40GB to play with.

I use SONAR LE and I'm looking for software dedicated to realistic latin percussion sounds and a drum kit that CW or a 3rd party may offer. I would like to make my tracks in real time using a keyboard controller.

I know there are sound libraries but I'm not clear about what they do or how they work. I don't know much about sampling software but if this is the route I need to take then it's time for me to learn.

    Thanks

Hola Taino! I take it that the LE version does not contain TTS-1, or Session Drummer, according to the comparison chart here. One way to go is to use sfz (free downloadable soundfont player), and then you'd have to scout around for samples. I presume you would want to use drumkits and latin percussion ? Then you'd have to chase down several types of soundfont samples for that purpose.

Another way, that will cost you a bit, is something like EZDrummer. For latin percussion, you would need to get the expansion pack for that. There are samples you can listen to on the Toontrack website, and you can check out some of my stuff on my website (without the latin percussion expansion which I'll probably get soon).
There are other similar options, but you need to have an idea of how much you want to spend, and whether you might need to beef up your PC. Good Luck! Joe

I installed an Edirol interface for a friend and it had SONAR LE bundled with it. It is the older version of SONAR LE based on SONAR 4 core and it did not have TTS-1. The only bundled instruments within SONAR LE proper were DreamStation2, Groove Player, and Cyclone. However, Edirol themselves bundled their own Virtual Sound Canvas which is a General MIDI soft-synth very similar to the TTS-1.

I believe the newer version of SONAR LE based on SONAR 6 core may have been released to OEM partners like Edirol this year but I haven't seen it yet to know what instruments may be bundled with it.

I take it that the LE version does not contain TTS-1...

Registered users of Sonar-LE can upgrade to Sonar Home Studio 6 for £49 or $79. This seems like a cheap way of obtaining a few useful plug-ins, including TTS-1.

Thanks for the heads up on Toontracks. I considered Native Instruments Battery 3. Their sounds are very good but I am afraid that there are too many issues regarding installation plus customer support. I am registered on their forum and I have seen too many issues on Bat 3.

NI is very anal when it comes to tech support or customer support because I own NI 2XT synth plugin. It does have good sounds and eventually I will get around to mastering that software.

Taino, I can't speak for everyone (of course), but I can tell you that I've so far had a great experience with Battery 3 with both Project 5 and Sonar 6 PE. Smooth install, NI's new registration software has worked fine (much better than their old system). There are others here who also are having good luck with B3. Might be worth a try, if you're in the mood.

    Cheers,

    Russ

RE: NI Bat 3 Timbales Sounds? 2008/01/07 02:01:01 (permalink)
Thanks for your input Russell. I really want to get B3. How user friendly is it when it comes to mapping out a kit so you could play in real time on a keyboard?

Can you check your sound library on B3 and see if you have the "shell" sound of your latin percussion library under timbales? That sound is executed by striking the metal sides of the timbales with drum sticks, giving a soft metalic but somewhat very light open tone. I think I heard it in the NI Demo under "Afro Cuban percussion", etc. but I need to verify this.

If you investigate salsa music it is the time keeping sound used to hold the groove in a salsa tune during the verses of the song. Please check if you have those sounds (high and low) in your B3. In latin jazz they use this sound on mambo grooves.

I will greatly appreciate this. There are other choices I'm looking at but B3 seems like the most practical choice for my needs.
