Is it possible to convert Z3ta arpegiator patterns to midi?

Is there something that is the reverse of the mid2cmp.exe? Is it possible to convert the arpegiator . cmp files into midi files? Thanks.

Unfortunately, no. However, if you have Sonar 7, you can use pitch-to-MIDI in V-Vocal to extract a MIDI file. I've done this with several of the arp patterns with perfect results. The best approach is to use a simple sound with no portamento or pitch modulation, turn off any effects (esp. delays), and set Sonar to a relatively slow tempo. Sequence one note that is exactly long enough to play through one cycle of the arp pattern, bounce it to audio, convert the audio clip to a V-Vocal clip, and use pitch-to-MIDI to convert. Works perfectly.

From a creative curiosity, simply because a friend and I are really starting to investigate the use of pitch to midi in our world, why in particular would you want to do the above? Not knocking it, just researching how others use it....

I did it because I liked some of the preset arp patterns, but wanted to edit them slightly to better fit my songs. It was just quicker to use pitch-to-MIDI than it was to try to learn some of the more elaborate MIDI patterns by ear, adjust the MDI velocities and note lengths, etc. Once I had the arp patterns in MIDI format, I altered them to fit my song, then imported the new patterns using mid2cmp. Piece o' Cake!

Off the topic, but another good use for pitch-to-MIDI is for doubling a vocal track melody with a vocoder. I make a MIDI track of the vocal melody using pitch-to-MIDI, use that MIDI track to trigger the notes that the carrier (the vocal audio track) will follow, add a modulator, and voila - you have a vocoder/robot backing track that perfectly follows your vocal line. It's a pretty cool effect with lots of room for experimentation - think Phil Collins' "Well, I remember..." and "... we ever met" lines on In the "Air Tonight" or BT's vocals on Tiesto's "Love Comes Again."

    Cryophonik,

Thanks for the methodology . That will open some creative doors.

    mid2cmp.exe

    Where is this file?
I found reference to it in Simon Cann's book (Cakewalk Synthesizers. Presets to Power Users) but can't find it in the Arpeggios folder or anywhere else on my PC
Is the Z3TA+ that comes with Sonar 7 a lite version and doesn't have that converter?

EDIT: Nevermind. I found out in the Sept2007 update of the book that this file isn't needed anymore with the most recent Z3TA (1.5) version.

I just want Z3ta+ to load midi files into the arp as advertised.

It works for me. How are you doing it?
Just create a 1 bar type 0 MIDI file and import it.
In the ARP section (top right) set it to MIDI FILE
