Can I record automation on a VST synth?

I'm kind of new to Sonar and DAW in general. I find it cumbersome to put envelopes in the audio track to control a synth parameter. It's not the same as performing. Can I record automation? I know how to control a synth parameter with a midi control, but I haven't figured out how to record my knob turns during a take.
