Recording to audio track from vst, How?
I have tried everything I can think of to record audio into an audio track from a VSti called XWOF. I know it has to be something simple as I used to be able to do it; but I am hitting a blank wall. For reference sake, XWOF does not take midi input at all. It generates algorithmic audio, and outputs as audio. I am just trying to capture that output into an audio track. I have searched the manual and help files; however i am either not seeing it; or I am just getting it wrong. TIA, John

Maybe I'm missing something. My request may be even more basic than you think. I can get output from XWOF4; but i can't get Sonar to actually record it. Jamstix would also work the same way. I am trying to figure out how to set up the tracks as far as input and outputs to get Sonar to record it. Perhaps my audio is not set up correctly; but i think it is. I'll have to check again. John

From the Insert Menu select SoftSynth and setup all audio tracks in the dialog box that appears. SONAR will then set up all the necessary tracks. play your VSTi and then freeze the track or bounce to it to "record the Audio". In Sonar you don't actually record the Audio output of a MIDI device but use the Freeze or Bounce functions.

It generates algorithmic audio AHA! That says it all...bouncing/freezing won't have the same effect as recording sometimes and it sounds like this VST is a good example for that... more to come (got to search..btw,the Search does work! ;) ok, found one of those long threads that explain why it would be better to also have a way to RECORD in realtime.. +1 (aaronk) http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.asp?m=1240262&mpage=1 I actually had in mind another older thread where i explained this too..couldn't find it for now.. (but the Search..the search DOES work guys! )

Well, I guess I'm not crazy then. It's a shame Sonar can't do this simply. I guess I'll have to try Reaper. Oh well. Thanks again! John

I agree, Reaper is not for me. i can't figure it out at all. Others seem to sear by it; but all i ended up doing is swering at it. I am not sure how I did it before; but I think it was something to do with routing "What you hear" to an audio track; but I'm not sure. i do not have that option to try anymore. It may have been with Acid Pro that I used it and not Sonar. Again, i don't quite remember. However, using Tape-It that i found on the other thread does provide a work-around until Sonar natively supports this. Thanks again! Take a look at the free Voxengo Recorder which records stereo audio from a channel or bus to a WAV file.

Hi. New project. Insert "VST..." soft synth track. Input of this track in "Midi Omni" of the particular soft synth VST, the output of this track in master. The Echo of this track activated. Insert audio track to the project. The input of this audio track selected as "Stereo" of the particular soft synth VST, or mono if it is a mono synth, and the output of this track in also master. Try to sync the soft synth to the host, Sonar in this case. Now, activate all the record facilities and also activate the "waveform preview" button in the audio track. Press "R" key in the keyboard or activate the record. Play the soft synth, if is not sync to the host . I am not recording wav through this tecnique, even when I see the waveform. If I copy the waveform, I am not allowed to export? With the excelent free software Xwof, the Wheel of fortune 6. I am using Sonar X3 Producer. Windows 7 64 bits. Regards.

Sonar is designed so that the softsynth output is re-created every time the MIDI track is played. Most of the time that is exactly what you want, but some synths have random parameters so that their output is not the same when they are played on consecutive runs. So the main advantage of this direct recording ability appears to be that you can capture the non-repetitive output of a synth. Reportedly this lack of a direct routing was to prevent inadvertent creation of feedback loops. The workaround is to use a "virtual audio cable," i. e. an application that can receive the audio output from Sonar's input echo and send it back into the input of an audio track in Sonar. Google virtual audio cable and you will find several such applications.

You can loop the synth output back and record it on an audio track. Then nudge it for any lag.

Sonar still is not able to do this without a good bit of mucking about but do you realise you replied to a 7 year old post.

What is the problem with using freeze or bounce to track?
This will record any randomness as well.
Are you doing manual adjustments to the VST while the song progresses? That's the only issue I can see that you can't do this way. You would need to record/write the adjustments as automation, then freeze/bounce...
What am I missing as an issue here?
If you really need to record the output of a vst to the input of another track, I believe you could use a loopback driver. I seem to remember such from long ago. It basically does what a cable from output to input would do...
