Sonar 7 Power - Shakespeare of Manuals

I've been using Sonar or a version thereof since Cakewalk 3 or something like that. I finally broke down and decided to see what Sonar 7 Power! was all about. I have had it for 3 days now, and have gone through it page by page. AMAZING - finally someone who knows how to write a manual that takes nothing for granted. Everything you ever wanted to know about SONAR is here, and in so much detail that even I am getting my head around things that baffled me before. It looks like I'll be ordering a copy of the Sound Forge equivalent once I've made my way through this. Thanks Scott for this superlative text!!!!!

    I especially like that passage:
"Normalization, a process made by an idiot, full of sound an fury, signifying nothing."

Ha! "What light through yonder Sonar monitor breaks?"

No, I don't think I can be compared to Shakespeare, but I do understand what you mean. There are a lot of dry manuals out there.

Thanks so much for your wonderful comments about my work!

What kind of information is in the book that is not in this forum, or is not (buried) in the OEM manual? Or is it the book format that is the selling point?

You could probably find the same info buried in the OEM manual or by searching the forum, assuming you are a very patient person and not too concerned about spending your time researching software issues rather than making music. Scott's book presents the information more succinctly, more clearly, and it's much easier to find! E.g., if you're wondering, "To bus, or not to bus -- that is the question?", or "My audio files, my audio files, wherefore art thou clicking and stuttering?", you'll find the answer quickly.

There's also information in there that you won't find in the manual... info about file setup, each audio effect, each soft synth, etc. It is NOT a manual rehash as some people may think. My books are written to be used in conjunction with the manual.

    Thanks!

Do your books go into **why** you would want to do something? Or is it mainly **how**?

    Hi Cityrat,

I would say yes, if I understand your question...

Sonar 7 Power shows you how to use Sonar and all of its various features. It explains what they are and why you would want to use them, however... if you're looking for a detailed book on home recording concepts or mixing, you would still need to read some other books to get a well-rounded education. Home recording it too vast a subject for any one book.

I'll put it this way... anyone using Sonar can benefit from reading the book, but this one book isn't going to teach you everything you need to know about home or pro recording.

Also, there's a detailed TOC plus chapter excerpts, etc. available at my site...

    Thanks!
    Scott

Just wondering if Sound Forge Power is of the same quality. I bought Sonar Power from Amazon for a very reasonable price (loving that Canadian dollar now), but I haven't checked into Sound Forge yet.
Who knows it may rival Josef Conrad!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Ah... now that's real Shakespeare...

Steve and Silver Dragon and Agincourtdb need to team up and write the first, original SONAR play. We could get the Cakewalk team to act out all the different parts and bring the show to Broadway!

The Sonar power books are literally excellent! Period.

Where shall we mix again. ProTools, Sonar or Cubase?

Where the motorboating's gone. Where dropouts are lost and won.

That will be ere the set of sun.

    Where the place?

Upon the heath. There to mix with Sonar.

    I come, Garrigus!

    Cakewalk calls.

    Anon.

Fair is foul and foul is fair.
Hover through the fog and filthy air.

    Hey Scott,

OT, I know, but, after years of being a Wavelab user, I just ordered Sound Forge 9 from Amazon.com and I noticed that the Power series currently only goes up to version 8. Do you have plans to publish a Sound Forge 9 Power book anytime soon?

btw, Sonar 7 Power also fell into my shopping cart while I was placing my order, my 3rd book of yours.

If Scott is the new Shakespeare, and I do think his stuff is great, then what are the Roland manuals? Graffiti written by Romans in the desert sands of Egypt?
