What Did I Do Wrong?
I loaded MC3 on my laptop to be able to do some midi work while traveling and then transfer the midi tracks to my home studio DAW Cubase. I did a "save as" on the project file and saved it as a MIDI Format 1 to preserve the individual tracks. If I open the .mid file in MC3, all the data appears correctly. When I open the .mid file in Cubase, the tracks appear but are all shortened to just 50 bars (the song has over 200 bars) and each track is blank. Do I need to save these as RIFF MIDI files (not even sure what that is, just shows up in the save as combo box)? Is there some other "switch" that I need to set to make the resulting .mid file readable in another application? I'm posting this in the Steinberg forum as well to see if maybe this is a problem on the Cubase side. Thanks in advance for any help.

sounds like a cubase problem to me. if you open it in MC and all of the bars are there, then I can't imagine it being an MC problem.

That's my initial thought too but wanted to cover all bases. Do you know what RIFF MIDI is?

I've never used it, but according to wikipedia, it's a standard MIDI file "wrapped in a RIFF chunk." I'm still not sure exactly what that means, but it doesn't sound like something you would need to use for the purpose of what you're doing. if you export as MIDI, then any program which reads MIDI should be able to import a standard MIDI file.

Sure enough the problem was operator error in Cubase. I had set the track locators to a 50 bar portion of the song that had no midi and so Cubase only imported that portion. Once I set the track locators to the full extent of the song everything imported fine. And I didn't have to eat any chunks of anything. Thanks for the help.
