snap/crakle/pop with HS6 and M-Audio Fastrack pro
When playing back audio while using the M-Audio Fastrack pro I get constant popping and clicking - even just a mono audio file, no effects, gain increase or anything. This is only when using Sonar HS. (SoundForge, Acid, and Vegas all perform flawlessly with no latency or buffer setting adjustments.) I've tried all the suggested latency and buffering settings with no results. I have tried all the different driver modes. If I use the SigmaTel soundcard in my laptop it plays back fine. I would tend to think this was a problem with the M-Audio device, were it not for the fact that all my other audio apps work just fine. I'm using a Dell Insperion 6400 Duo core processor, 7200 rpm hd, 2 gig RAM. Windows XP pro. SP2 And like I said before, my OTHER Audio apps work fine! Any suggestions would be great kev

If you have tried another project with the same results, I would uninstall Sonar and then re-install it.

Did you check for the latest drivers?

I would try re-loading the M-Audio software first. Check the box for any loose connections or loose USB port. If that doesn't work, I am guessing you have a defective M-Audio unit. I have the same one and it works great.

Yes, I have the latest drivers. Well, I would think that if I had a defective Fastrack, then it wouldn't work with all my other apps. Right? It's only Sonar HS that gives me the problem. Nikolas: it seems you may have the same or similar laptop as me (Insperion 6400) I've tried to keep my system as un-cluttered and smooth running as possible. I've followed all the suggestions for optomizing for audio - any suggestions? And again, SoundForge, Vegas and Acid all work fine. thanks kev

Kev: Mine is much less of performer than yours. I am getting a new setup built as we speak though. It should be pretty bomber. With regards to your problem - If the other programs are working fine with the M-Audio FTP, then the problem must lie in Sonar HS settings. I am still really a newb to this, but have you checked all your I/O settings? I always choose left input mono and stereo output. What latency setting are you using? Other than those items, I leave the reall problem solving to the pros on this forum.

Make sure the sample rates are the same between your interface and Sonar. Also, I'm not sure if SHS6 has a wave profiler (XL does, not sure if regular SHS6 does), but, if it does, run that. Are you recording in 16 or 24 bit? If your system isn't powerful enough and can't handle 24 bit, then you'll get clicks and pops. Maybe you just have too much stuff going on with your system....

.... to clarify, I meant 'too much stuff going on,' as in perhaps you're running too many programs and your computer is not liking it. Sonar can be temperamental sometimes. It definitely doesn't like to play nice with other programs.

Thanks Nikolas, and Jimmy; I've run the profiler MANY times. Tried all kinds of latency settings. My uses for HS6 (i do have xl) are primarly for midi, but would it would be nice to be able to utalize the audio features so I wouldn't have to switch back and forth between my Sony apps. I don't really need all that audio power and I don't really think I tax the system. I'd just like to be able to record my midi stuff to a wav and maybe use a littel boost 11 on the mixdown - not a lot of inserts or busses or anything. But at this point I can't even get clean playback of a short mono wav file. Guess I'll just keep hacking away! Thanks again, guys kev

If I use the SigmaTel soundcard in my laptop it plays back fine. DISABLE the sigmatel in windows. THEN rerun the wave profiler, or change to ASIO driver mode.
