Alternatives to Sonar ?

OK, as my username suggests, I'm a bit of a n00b to the whole computer music experience. Unfortunately, my experience so far hasn't been a great one after buying a USB control keyboard with audio interface that Sonar just will not output the audio through. Maybe someone will come up with a solution eventually but until then my question is:

Is there an alternative to Sonar 7 that will give me as much choice in the instrument range ?

I like the amount of voices and kits that Sonar gives you out of the box and I will be wanting a good sequencer as well, obviously.

So........any suggestions ?

Ta.

i think you've come to the wrong place to ask that :)

i use a usb keyboard with audio interface and it works fine with sonar, you just have to make sure you put the right settings.

you're going to have to set up your system properly with whatever software you use

If you give us some details about your system, hardware and version of Sonar you're using, I bet we could get it working for you.
Care to give it a shot? Or would you rather just throw away a $500 piece of software?

OK, sorry. I just read your other thread. Any chance you could return the unit and try something else?
Strange, because I read up on the unit and it says that "This unit is so easy to set up that it truly is plug and play right out of the box"

I thought it may have been a hardware issue but it works fine with Ableton (comes bundled with the keyboard). I won't be throwing anything aways cos I was only using the Sonar trial version anyway.

Anyway, this is supposed to be the section for discussing non-Cakewalk software........apparently not. <shrugs>

Well... there are a ton of other sequencers. However, it would be strange that you only have a problem with SONAR. What type of USB keyboard and audio interface are you using?

Other sequencers.... well, in about 2 seconds the "REAPER" zealots will tell you it is, like, oh my gawd, the BEST, and can do EVERYTHING and is FREE and it is like just so kwel.

Then you'll get: "Dude, just get a MAC and Garageband or LOGIC. PeeCees suck anyway. Go Obama."

Maybe some fringe: "Insert(Ableton, Fruity Loops, Tracktion, MuLab, EnergyExT) is the BEST. Cause I said so"

Or the old standard: "Cubase has the coolest GUI - but there is no demo." And like OH MY GOD IT HAS A DONGLE STAY AWAY!!!!!"

Reaper isn't free, and its legitimate users wouldn't claim such a thing.

I see this everywhere that this program is free, and I have no clue where people get this idea from...even PC Mag advertised it as being free. WTF? Do people not even check their sources before creating magazine articles anymore?

THIS is the keyboard/interface that he's using. I think that's the problem.

The Novation stuff is top-notch. I've use both the X-Stations (49 and 25 key versions) in the past with Sonar with no problem. They have a similar design and technology as the XioSynth, so it should work with Sonar. I'm sure, as others have mentioned, that the OP just needs to know how to set it up properly.

McNoob - start by going into Options > Audio and select the Drivers tab. Make sure that the XioSynth is selected as your input/output device. If it does not appear in the list of audio devices, you may not have the drivers installed correctly. Once the XioSynth is selected, close and restart Sonar. Make sure that you have speakers or headphones connected to the XioSynth and you should be good to go. Also, make sure that the output of your audio tracks and/or busses are routed to the XioSynth.

David, I don't know what your specific problem is, but I'm quite certain it's not SONAR-specific.

I wouldn't want you to go through product after product looking for the one that's compatible with your controller, only to find that in the end it was a simple configuration issue all along.

But if you're looking for alternatives to SONAR, why not Ableton? It's a good product, and you already have a "lite" version of it.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

My only problem with Ableton is the distinct lack of usable voices out of the box.....so to speak. Sonar has a whopping library and I could really use a lot of the sounds included. I've managed to have a crack with it using WDM drivers with ASIO4ALL but it was obviously very laggy whereas Ableton runs perfectly.

I've no doubt it is a really simple problem and I've double-checked everything that has been suggested in this thread and the other one in the Sonar Producer section so I'm kinda stumped. I even contacted Novation about it so I have a back and forth going with a guy there now who, even though I've told him everything I've tried, he insists on having me check them all again.

    Hmmmmmmm.

Thanks for yer input anyway chaps.
