Midi question

Please Help

I have a Korg Tr61 Workstation and would like to use it's midi in and out. On the back of it there are 3 connections,
Midi in, Midi out and a usb port. I have hooked up the usb port to my laptop thinking that that is all I have to do but I'm
not getting any indication as to if the midi info is being sent to cakewalk. With this usb port connected to my laptop, do I
still need to have a midi interface connected between my keyboard and laptop along with the usb port? I am not sure
what this usb port on the back of my korg is used for. The manual that came with the korg is non-descriptive to say the
least. If anyone can spell this out in basic terms for me as to how to hook up my keyboard so I can start my projects, I
would be grateful.

I don't know for sure, but until you get a definitive answer, my guess: yes the USB will be a MIDI port, no you don't need an interface (that would be for old-style MIDI port to USB), but probably you do need to install the drivers on your laptop. Did the Korg come with a CD? Check out the Korg website for further info/downloads.

Yes and no. The TR61 is able to send and receive MIDI via USB, but that requires that you install and properly configure a driver in your computer. This piece of software (the driver) should have come with your Korg TR61. If not, you can probably download it from the Korg website. Follow the instructions carefully, especially when and when not to have the unit hooked-up and powered-on.

So the TR61 communicates with its driver - installed in your computer, and the driver communicates with the computer.

If you wanted to use the "old style" MIDI ports, you would need a MIDI interface, which would send USB to the computer and in the same way would communicate via its own driver.

    Hope that helps!

... which would still require that you install and properly configure a driver in your computer (this time the driver supplied with the MIDI interface).

yes, the only way to NOT install a driver for MIDI input would be if your soundcard and keyboard both have MIDI I/O ports and NOT going thru USB.

And wouldn't there still be a driver involved in the process - just that you wouldn't install a separate one for this application?

I actually ended up by uninstalling the MIDi driver of my M-Audio Keystation since I use standard MIDI ports to my soundcard. The reason I uninstalled it is because it created some conflicts with the soundcard MIDI driver. Now the USB port is only used for powering the keyboard.

yeah, I guess even the soundcard will have a MIDI driver included with it as well, huh?
