Problem with dual core installed in previously single core system
I had an extra AMD Athlon 4200+ dual core and intalled it in my backup system which previously had an AMD Athlon 3500+ single core. This is on a system with Windows XP Pro SP2, updated with all udates. I also installed the AMD dual core drivers. The bios recognizes the new dual core correctly. Also in Windows, the dual core shows up correctly in Device Manager. The problem is the dual core doesn't show up in AMD's Power Monitor or in Sonar 7. The Power Monitor says there is a problem with the Bios or Windows. In Sonar 7 the Multiprocessor check box is greyed out. Note: I did not reinstall Windows. Windows was initially installed with the single processor and if possible, I'd like to not have to reinstall Windows. Any idea's Thanks

You could try just reinstalling Sonar and AMD's Power Monitor. That is a lot less hassle than reinstalling XP, and it might do the trick. If that doesn't work, I wouldn't really know what to suggest. Bios updates and drivers are usually the first port of call, but it looks like you have done that already. I think if the reinstall of the software doesn't work, I personally would probably want to reinstall windows. There are actually ways to minimise the hassle of reinstalling windows. Things like just buying a smallish cheap (but good) hard disk, and then just copy across all your data (MP3's, and whatever). So you can then just wham bam format your main disk, install XP, and wham bam drag and drop all your stuff back across. You can also even copy your Internet Explorer favourites and stuff, so your fresh install of windows is nice and fast and perfect, and yet you don't feel like you are having to start again with it. Also if you don't have much data and you have the original disks of all your software and stuff, then just a bit of data could be backed up onto a writeable DVD, which would save you doing the hard disk idea. One thing that might be interesting to check, is to load up Sonar or a game or something, and then do Control-Alt-Delete, and look in your Task Manager and see if the second core is being used. If it's being used then it's possible that it's actually working fine and the software just isn't registering it.

With the caveat that I'm using an Intel-based system... when I upgraded my CPU to a dual-core Pentium, Windows XP Home took it all in stride. My vote would be with either reinstalling the power monitor OR some way of resetting the app. Have you tried unregistering and re-registering the app? Here's the way to do this: Where x is the executable or .dll for your program, at the Windows command prompt, first: regsvr32 /u x and then: regsvr32 x will sometimes help problems like this. This might get you around needing a reinstall. HTH Russ

Does the dual core show up as two cores in Task Manager under performance? In other words, a graph for each core? ew

The link i posted SHOULD work for getting your second core going, without loosing anything. Any problems you currently have will come along with it though, and you will have to re-install all your MS updates.

Thanks for the link. I have been looking it over and will give it a shot. It does seem as though the Hal is the issue. The problem is my Win XP Pro is SP1 so I have to do a little more than just a repair. So I have a little reading to do. Thanks again, I'll repost after I try it.

Thanks for the info. It does seemed to be a Windows based problem. I have tried uninstallng and reinstalling the programs without any luck.
