Optimizing XP

I have SONAR on my XP box, and this box is used solely for recording. No Internet, nada. I turned off all of the services that the box didn't need (start -> run -> services.msc). I used this site as a reference: http://www.theeldergeek.com/alerter.htm You can read about each service/process, and his recommendations and then click 'next' to check out the next service. I do this with my services window open and make changes while I read about each service.

This has really helped my computer in terms of speed since I was able to turn off so many services/processes that were running in the background. I think I killed about 30 of them that auto-started on boot. I have used this site many times and consider it accurate/safe. Just use caution that you don't turn off a service you need...

Are there any other tricks you folks use like this to tweak XP for speed?

Very simply, the best advice is to eliminate all unnecessary software from XP on your DAW machine, but unless you have a masters degree in Windows, this can be a challenge.

There are www resources with good information, fortunately. This link was recently posted over on the Sonar forum:

    http://stevestechguide.com/ultimate-windows-xp-optimization-tweak-guide/

It contains another rich vein of XP tweaking information.

Another concept that is very important in Sonar -- audio IO drivers must have their own interrupt vector (IRQ number in Windows), which is unshared with any other devices. With a desktop computer that uses a hardware card on the PCI bus, it is usually an easy task to get a unique IRQ for your audio device, however, with USB or IEEE 488 (Firewire) -based audio devices, you're not always guaranteed a unique interrupt vector now that Windows automatically assigns IRQ numbers in the HAL (Hardware Access Layer). In fact, some laptops just cannot be configured to use certain devices. For instance, my IBM T-40 places all relevant devices on the same IRQ as the video driver, and video is one device you cannot do without. This can be a real problem for those who wish to use a laptop, and with some machines, there's just no way around it.

Killing unwanted services definitely helps. I achieved the same result with start -> run -> msconfig - basically similar to services.msc but a bit easier to read. I would also disable any unused hardware in your control panel if you haven't already, such as any built in/preinstalled sound card, modem, NIC, etc. and run both a scandisk and defrag to freshen things up.

    What they said.

I use this guide for settings + XP-Lite to properly uninstall unnecessary stuff + TuneUp Utilities 2008 to keep the OS clean & in shape.

    Good luck.

    www.blackviper.com

I have all my pc's set to his safe configuration and the super tweaks done with no problems

    www.tweakxp.com

I also used pc pitstop's optimize software
but you can go to the website run the beta tests
and find out whats running in the background
    and turn it off yourself

I used the software plus the beta testing and blackvipers tweaks
    and all is well

make sure you have your input output buffers set - start at 256 and go up or down from there depending on your system
    I use the asio drivers
CJ's music is the guy to talk to on here

    good luck

I have a program called TUT (Total Ultimate Troubleshooter) from Answersthatwork.com it takes a lot if the research and guess work out of the equation. I recommend it.
