Pro Channel tweaks...to the WRONG track!!!

Am I the only idiot who has found himself making changes within PC just to figure out later that I was tweaking the wrong track???!??  I'm trying to train myself to ALWAYS LOOK DOWN to see what track is listed...sometimes I start clicking away within the track view window and jump directly over to the PC settings, just to find afterward that I was tweaking the wrong track...almost like Sonar stayed "locked" on a previous track when I when I thought it switched over.

Any other idiots 'round here feel my pain???  =(

What version of Sonar. I ask because.

Beginning with X2. tweaking a track's Volume,Pan,Sends, mute, solo etc does NOT select that track. I was told this was because people were tweaking away on the PC, mouse over to mute or solo a different track and the PC in front of them would change also, leading to confusion and  complaints.
You may be experiencing the opposite problem. In X2 you must explicitly select the track first if you want it to be the selected / focused track.

I found this out by shock and accident while developing my control surface plugin, And was told the above by dev support.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!   I'm on X1.  Sounds like another reason to get X2?  Or not perhaps...

The kicker is that while this is going on, I'm usually like..."man that compression setting is REALLY bringing out the high end...oooh I LOVE what that saturation is doing to the track, very subtle effect..."

The placebo effect I guess... ha!

I have been confused by what is showing in the Inspector in Track View. You have to be extra careful. Some activities, like changing envelope automation, do not switch the focus to the current track. So YOU are focused on a new track, but the inspector hasn't followed you.

In general, I think the good folks at Sonar did think out when the Inspector will update to a different track. I know that more than once I was confused by the behavior.

I'm now more cautious and really don't have a problem ever anymore.

I do think that the Focus vs Selected behavior in X2 with Auto-Zoom is some of the most confusing and ill documented stuff I've bumped into in Sonar. Really, this is what you are talking about when you are confused by what track is presented in the Inspector. The total ramifications of this far exceed what's in the Inspector IMHO.

BTW, this was NEVER a problem up through 8.5. This problem is definitely related to the X Series and might be tied to multi touch as well. For example, imagine you are showing the Inspector in Console View and then use 4 fingers to move faders at the same time. What track should be updated to the Inspector (which can only show one at a time)?

Personally, while it may be working to specification, I consider this a bug because there is no clear explanation or caution on the help files and it is SO unintuitive it trips up many. People end up totally confused as to how their mix got wrecked and think it's just arbitrary changes. Maybe bug is the wrong word. Impedance mismatch? Not sure :-) But basically, it is so counter intuitive it causes user error.

StudioCat > I use Windows 10 and Sonar Platinum. I have a touch screen.
I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

Caminitic, I love this post. It totally made me smile. Even just last night, I was soloing a bounce of a mix auditioning it when I decided to go back to make a few more tweaks (but I didn't un-solo the bounce so my tweaks weren't heard). I'd made 4 or 5 changes and was scratching my head before I realized my mistake.

I'd like to see the currently selected track appear a little more obvious (color).
In peripheral vision, it's hard to distinguish the subtle change in gray.
If that were more obvious, I think it would help to avoid processing the wrong track in the inspector.
Obviously the track number/name are at the bottom of the inspector channel strip.

When you're in the inspector, the two faders shown are for the selected track and its output bus.
I think that's logical... but (for me) the easy way to avoid confusion is to close the inspector when working in the console view.

    Best Regards,

I like your idea, Jim. Perhaps the color of the track and console strip and inspector could all match to help tie it all together.

This can cause additional confusion in that key strokes and mouse wheel changes are sent to this track. After an errant key stroke , it can be hard to know where to check to make sure there is no negative impact. Or you spin the mouse wheel and don't see a ui change. .. Did you change an eq setting ?
