P5 Vista crash issue

I'm running the latest 2.5 update from the site, and occasionally while I'm working I'll get this really nasty crash bug. I'll be working and do something and P5 will crash, and this is all well and forgivable. The trouble comes that when I restart P5, it says "Project5 is already running." Sure enough I open the task manager and there's Project5, hogging up way too much memory. What really blows is that I can't kill it from the task manager. End Process and End Process Tree do nothing, even after waiting for half an hour for it to die. The only solution I've found is to restart my computer. Has anyone else experienced this? I've done a little research and apparently Vista is super cool and doesn't have complete control over program shutdown, so this bug can happen for many applications. I was working on a project with a deadline a few nights ago and P5 kept crashing, and every time I had to restart. This is a MAJOR buttfactoryish workflow killer and got me very frustrated. Anyone else experience this, and have any possible solutions to the unkillable P5?

Brb, restarting

it's most likely the audio driver - if the soundcard's external, try power-cycling it; then make sure you have the latest drivers (wdm or asio?)

Sometimes unplugging my usb keyboard cures this problem and p5 will start again.

DelvarWorld, I get this occasional "P5 running" issue on XP, so probably has nothing to do with Vista.

Also, I highly recommend you save multiple instances of the projects you work on, preferrably save a new file after every change or addition to the project. I once lost an almost finished song after the file became corrupted.

Yup, it's nearly always a USB controller of some type that isn't released and keeps P5 running...switching any such device off and on will usually allow P5 to shut down.

I have a controller but it plugs in through MIDI (soundcard has a MIDI I/O jack on the faceplate, very nice). The only other thing I have is a mic plugged in through mini TRS. I tried unplugging both to no avail. I do I have a soundblaster f1tality sound card that has some control panel stuff running, but that doesn't seem to affect the crashing either.

I've seen this few times (less than 10), about equally much on XPSP2 and Vista. I think I saw it mostly when running with ASIO4ALL driver.

One thing to try would be go to device manager, disable your audio interface and see if that makes P5 to die. Disable/enable device cycle would be much shorter solution than reboot.
