Two things
I'm writing something in Sonar HS (I normally use Project5), and I noticed two things I can't seem to do, but I'm not sure if there's a way. 1. After I draw in notes, I want to be able to "paint" in the velocity for the entire bar. This is particularly useful for long snare rolls. I do not want to individually adjust each note's velocity. 2. I want to record an effect on a synthesizer. In P5, I would simply write in the part, press record, turn the knob while it's recording, and it would record the effect as its own clip. Can I do these in Sonar?

Hi. Assuming you're talking about MIDI and not AUDIO tracks.... 1. Yes. You can 'draw controllers' using the pencil tool in the controllers pane of the Piano Roll view for any measures you wish, including note velocity, pan, expression etc. 2. Don't fully understand what you're asking (I don't have P5). I'm assuming you want to apply an effect (e.g. Reverb?) to an already recorded MIDI track that is driving a software synthesiser? If so, yes, you can do that in SHS by enabling 'write automation' for the appropriate parameter of a plugin effect that is in the FX bin of the synths associated audio track and moving that plugin parameter's control whilst playing back

Yeah, but can you be more specific? How do you adjust only the velocity and not the notes? If I just use the draw tool, it's going to draw in notes. I only want to draw in velocity. I want to draw in a curve of velocities for a bunch of notes. I see no apparent way of doing this. In Project5, I would simply click on the automation tool, and I'd be able to do it instantly. Why can't it be that easy? I've been looking for a long time and cannot do this one simple thing.

Okay, I figured it out...finally. You have to hold the SHIFT key to draw multiple velocites. Wow, that was totally unobvious. I'm surprised that I discovered it at all. Why couldn't there just be a button for that? One question remains, though. When you hold shift, you draw a linear progression of velocities. Can you make it a curve?

Wow, that was totally unobvious. I'm surprised that I discovered it at all. Why couldn't there just be a button for that? It's (the actual way to do it) easy to find in the Help files. "Velocity" --> "editing in PRV or Inline PRV": To Edit Velocity 1. If you want to edit multiple notes at the same time, select them with the Select tool (see Selecting Notes for help). Editing any of the notes in the selection edits all the selected notes in the same way. 2. Make sure Velocity has a checkmark next to it in the Show/Hide MIDI Events menu. 3. Enable the Draw tool. 4. Move the cursor over the upper third of the middle of the note. When you reach the target area, the Draw tool displays a small velocity column to show that you have enabled velocity editing (this only happens if you've hidden the Controller pane). 5.Drag up or down to edit velocity. The tooltip shows you the velocity value that the cursor is passing through, the difference from the original value, and how many notes you're editing. If you want to hear the changes in velocity as you make them, enable Velocity Audition in the Edit MIDI Event Type dropdown menu.

project5 is primarily a midi application and is seen as a compliment to sonar - lotsa users rewire project5 into sonar for precisely the reasons you've outlined of some things being easier in p5 - and lots of people would l**** some of the features of p5 to be incorporated into s8...

Yeah, I only use MIDI and soft synths. I write electronica and orchestral music. But supposedly Sonar has a better audio engine, so I'm trying it out.

That would adjust all the velocities to being the same thing. I wanted to draw a curve of velocities. in the piano roll view, make sure the controller pane is ON, make sure that NOTES/VELOCITY is checked as the TYPE. use the pencil to draw velocity curves in the controller pane window.

Excellent. Screen shot and everything. Now that is a good responce. Once again, the controller pane is such an obscure button that I never noticed it. In Project5, you can adjust both controllers and notes in the same screen. That is so much easier.

Alright, so about the recording of effects. The original responce actually doesn't apply to me. I want to record a cutoff effect. I should be able to hit record, turn the cutoff knob while the track is playing, then stop it and have the effect recorded as its own track. That didn't work... I can't enable it in the FX Bin because it's within the synth, you know?

Okay, I found something - I press the "enable automation recording" on the synth (I'm using PSYN by the way). However, it didn't work. After recording, I played it back, and there is no sound.

I want to record automation by turning knobs on a soft synth such as cutoff and resonance. Like I said, I found out how to enable automation recording, but after I do it, there is no sound in that section of the song. Ever seen this?

no, every time I record automation everything still works like it's supposed to. can you give us more details about the automation you're recording? you said you're using PSYN, but which controls are you automating? and what do you mean by: "I can't enable it in the FX Bin because it's within the synth, you know?"

The automation I'm recording is cutoff and resonance in PSYN. These are not found in the FX Bin. You adjust them on the synth itself.
